"It's pretty surreal. Sometimes you forget it's a job." What Hastings also thinks is awesome is the fact that he's making history by plavine this sea HASTINGS in Florida during the winter for affiliated and independent league scouts. He got a call early in the year and signed in March. Hastings compares the level of play to that of Single-A and had to make adjustments offensively throughout the season.

"It's pretty good," he said. "I had to get used to the pitching. Everybody throws 88 and up and they hit their spots a lot better." He has learned that "when you get that one pitch, take advantage of it." Hastings' offense is improving as is his right thumb, in which he tore ligaments about a month ago while making a play in the field. The injury will not require surgery, but Hastings missed some time and must tape it each game. While one of the league's goals is providing an affordable atmosphere for fans, the Lizards' home field is at the local high school, which according to Hastings is unlike playing at a high school field in this area.

"Their high school fields are like stadiums," he said. "It's really a lot different" Promo of the week It's Guaranteed Win Night on son for the Lewisville Lizards, part of the Continental Baseball League that is playing its inaugural season based in Texas. "I can always look back and say that I played on the first team in the inaugural season here," he said. The league is made up of four teams with hopes of expanding to 8-10 teams next season. The CBL is a league that is, "dedicated to creating America's Hometown Teams providing a fun environment for families to experience professional baseball at affordable prices," according to the league's Web site, www.cblprc-ball.com.

Nothing's different," the Phillies left fielder insisted Saturday when asked about the torrid offensive pace that has hiked his average nearly 70 points. "You always feel better when you're doing good." Entering Saturday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, few hitters were doing much better.

Burrell was leading the majors with a .449 average (35-for-78) since he reached a season-low .201 on July 1. He also had eight home runs, 24 RBIs and an .833 slugging percentage in 26 games. And, in the second inning, he belted a two-run home run into the left-field bleachers to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. It was the third time in Burr-ell's career that he has homered in three straight games and the first since April 9-11, 2005. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel attributed the turnaround to a better weight shift or "load" in Burr-ell's hips.

Manuel and hitting coach Milt Thompson had been working with Burrell to quicken his bat and generate more power. "This is how good Pat can be," shortstop Jimmy Rollins said. "I've been there. You're going through some tough times, and then, in the second half, it's like, who is this guy? With his power and his ability, he can do a lot of good things." No way, Jose: Manuel has been impressed by veteran right-hander Jose Mesa's success since being signed as a free agent June 9. In 22 appearances entering Saturday night, Mesa had a 2.74 ERA and had allowed 24 base runners (14 hits, nine walks, one hit batter) in 23 innings.

"I remember when we got him, (pitching coach Rich) Dubee said, 'Charlie, the more we use him, the better his command will Manuel said. "Jose's a workhorse. I can get him up, not use him and use him the next day. He's strong. He's in really good shape." Inside pitches: Right fielder Shane Victorino (strained right calf) has been taking swings and remains on track to return by Aug.

15, when he's eligible to be activated from the disabled list. Right-hander Kyle Lohse (bruised right forearm) will throw a bullpen session today that may determine If he can make his next start Wednesday night.
