Pennsville 15-7 By CELESTE E. WHITTAKER Courier-Post Staff The New Egypt High School Softball team was as good as it gets this season. Think about this: The Warriors won 21 straight games to end their season. The Warriors won just about everything imaginable, from the prestigious Hammonton Invitational Tournament to the Ocean County Tournament, to the Burlington County League Patriot Division, to the Burlington County League championship game, to the South Jersey Group 1 title. The final piece was the Group 1 state title the Warriors brought home June 5 with a 3-0 win over Wood-Ridge at Toms River East.

It was the program's first state title since 2006, and it was the icing on the cake that was a dominating season. The Warriors ended their season 29-2, and for their achievements they've earned the Courier-Post Cup, which goes to the Courier-Post's No. 1 team in South Jersey. New Egypt did it all without a senior in its starting lineup, which means the Warriors could be even better next season. "This was probably the most successful season for the Softball program," said New Egypt softball coach Kevin English, who is also the school's head wrestling coach.

"We accomplished many goals that we set in the beginning of the season. We won three in-season tournaments (Hammonton, Ocean County, and the inaugural BCL), the South Jersey sectional and the overall Group 1 state championship. We also won the Patriot Division for the second year in a row, going undefeated in our division. "Beyond all the accolades, this group of girls was a pleasure to coach. The girls formed a strong bond season as well.

New Egypt's only two losses were to Hammonton, (1-0) in the Rancocas Valley Elite Softball Tournament early in the season, and to Rancocas Valley (3-2) in a regular-season game. But, the thing is, the Warriors were able to avenge both of those losses at key points in the season, meaning they beat every team on their schedule at least once. Bausher had 15 strikeouts and gave up only one hit to Hammonton in a 5-0 win in the semifinals of the Hammonton Invitational. New Egypt then beat Rancocas Valley 1-0 in nine innings on a homer by Soles in the Burlington County League championship game May 26. English said repeatedly that the strong schedule his team played prepared it for anyone it would face in the playoffs, particularly in the state final game.

The Warriors became the first Group 1 team in the 29-year history of the Hammonton Invitational to win it, beating Group 3 powers Hammonton and Kingsway in the semis and finals, respectively. They knocked off Group 4 power Toms River East in the Ocean County Tournament final. "As a whole, this group of girls was able to work together to become an unstoppable force, and they walked away from their season knowing they had accomplished what they had set out to do," English said. "We all share the incredible feeling that comes with being the second softball team in school history to end our season as the Group 1 state champions. "They all like each other, they all hung out together it's a pleasure to coach them.

It's just an exciting feeling. This is nice and exciting for me, but I really just liked to see their reaction." Reach Celeste E. "She kept us in games all year.

She brings consistency every game. We know with her on the mound, we're going to be in every game. It takes a lot of the pressure off of everyone because she pretty much is going to hold the other team in check for the most part." But, Bausher had help. Shortstop Kayla Soles, also a junior, was phenomenal all year. Soles, who has verbally committed to the University of Louisville, batted .469 with 46 hits and 40 runs scored.

Catcher Haley Anderson, second baseman Erika Tucker and first baseman Morgan Knigge came through for the Warriors all visit ounvctsits: early in the season that was the glue that held them together. With the state championship as their ultimate goal, this 'army of one' marched forward through their grueling schedule, avoiding the obstacles and land mines that were in front of them. We did this virtually unscathed, only suffering two setbacks that would be avenged." Junior pitcher Emily Bausher was the centerpiece. The 2010 Courier-Post Player of the Year went 27-2 with a 0.32 ERA and 422 strikeouts only the seventh player in state history to top 400 strikeouts in one season. She had 17 strike The Top 20 was selected by staff writer Celeste E.
