But I cannot emphasize enough how much we see this as the kind of calling that a person also needs to be professionally educated for. "That's one reason we worked so hard for a licensure law in the state. Before, anybody who wanted to do social work could go out there and do it.

Now they can no longer be licensed unless they have a bachelor or master's degree (in social work) and pass a licensure exam." Today, such licensing is not required of employees who do social work for the state Department of Human Services, said Brooks. "However, I believe there is interest in a redirection of this policy to being more concerned that persons who deal with families in crisis should be professionally educated and trained." And Brooks said the local chapter of NASW will continue to push for a policy which demands just that. "We have long advocated that people who are giving direct services on the front line need to be the most skilled of people working with human services." Bankrupt? There's support available By Leslie Ellis Gannett Newt Service Filing for bankruptcy can pack both financial and emotional punches enough so that a national support group for the bankrupt has sprung up. The Consumer Fresh Start Association was started by Bob Throckmorton of Princeton, 111., who went through bankruptcy himself about 10 years ago. After two years, his organization has nearly 15,000 members.

They receive a quarterly newsletter that runs articles on re-establishing credit, dealing with collection agencies and resolving family conflicts. The association also offers: a secured credit card, which requires a $400 minimum deposit; a nationwide network of personal counselors and access to a research center that evaluates promotions offering loans and credit cards to those with credit problems. Membership costs $40 a year. For more information, write Consumer Fresh Start, 217 N. Church, Princeton, IL 61356.
