THE CLARION-LEDGER I JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1991 inJ APT-Chahnel 16 fires it loTil I TV news director Kurtorigtoil WJTV's Saddler gets title of vice president A replacement is "It's not that he didn't try. He gave it his best shot." WAPT owner president Dick Appleton From Stall and Wire Reports expected to be named in a few weeks. By Leslie R. Myers Clarlon-Ladgar Stall Writer WAFT-Channel 16 news direc Walter Saddler, the longtime news director of WJTV, has been promoted to vice president of news for Broadcasts of Mississippi. The company is the licensee for WJTV in Jackson and WHLT in Hatties-burg.

Saddler will continue to co-anchor WJTV's 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts. He joined the station as managing editor in 1984 and became news director the same year. He is a graduate of St. John's University in New York.

network stations, NBC affiliate WLBT-Channel 3 and CBS affiliate WJTV-Channel 12. "I like to use the analogy that this is a family of four television stations and I've got one sick kid the Jackson station," Appleton said. "I'm absolutely dedicated to a marketing plan that obviously calls for excellence in every area of the station. "It's the tough, long-term approach," he said. "We are going to be competitive." pleton added.

"He gave it his best shot." Kurtright, who worked at WAPT about two years, was not available for comment. Appleton has not chosen a new news director. He also is expected to name a new vice presidentgeneral manager in a few weeks. His Northstar Television Group Inc. owns WAPT and three other stations.

Appleton is trying to rebuild WAPT and make it more competitive with Jackson's other major tor Terry Kurtright was fired from the ABC affiliate Monday. "We terminated Terry, that's correct. I just felt we needed someone with more experience and more expertise in the long term," WAPT ownerpresident Dick Appleton said from his North Carolina office. "I'm very requiring and demanding on what the image and the look and the journalistic values of that station are going to be. Jessica Fletcher may have more murder writings in her. Word around Hollywood was that this might be the last year for CBS' Murder, She Wrote. But on the heels of renewed ratings strength, CBS Entertainment execu 1 i Circle of Recovery' focuses on black men beating addiction "They talked about defeat, depression and prison," Bill Moyers says. By Scott Williams The Associated Press tive vice president Pe- Lansbury ter Tortorici says "it's entirely possible" Murder could return next year. That would put on hold a deal CBS has with star Angela Lansbury to star in a half-hour sitcom.

Fox's Friday UFO Report: Sightings reaped the network'a biggest Friday viewer-ship ever, and there's talk about making the special a weekly series. Totally Hidden Video and Best of the Worst are set to move to Fridays in November, but Ann Daniel, who produced lFO with partner Henry Winkler, says, "We could move fairly quickly" to make UFO a series. found courage and dignity where we might have thought there was none. Circle of Recovery deals with a group of black men, mostly middle-aged, who meet weekly to support each other, to help each other confront the obstacles to recovery. What's different about these men is that they're also there to help each other to cope with other fundamental issues, like racism, sexism, and the long-suppressed rage of mature black males in American society.

"We listened to them talk about drugs and alcohol, love, anger, their parents and their children," Moyers said. "They talked about defeat, depression and prison. It would take courage, I told them, to talk so openly on camera. And they said they would try." Try they did. There's nothing forced or contrived about what these men have to say.

They open up themselves and their lives to documentary camera. It is a courageous act. Drug counselor and former addict Kenny Hall, a skilled speaker and a thoughtful interviewee, offers this insight: "I'm not a drug addict because of racism. I'm a drug addict because when I put drugs in my body, something happens, just like anyone else who has that propensity to addiction But when you remove the drugs, I'm still black, still worthless, still ugly, still no good. That's recovery for me.

To challenge those demons on a daily basis." As he drives to work in the morning, Dave, another group member, recalls his days as a drug user. Back when he was using, if he were up at that hour he would wonder about the morning traffic. "I thought the people who did this really run the world." Dave, who did prison time at San Quen-tin and works as a painter, also recalls how he perfected his convict's smooth, tough, bad-dude walk in prison. Much later, behind the wheel and driving to work, Dave says only this: "I never dreamed that I would be fightin' this traffic." NEW YORK People who dial past Circle of Recovery, an hour-long Bill Moyers special tonight on 9 on Mississippi ETV, will miss a thoughtful, intimate portrait of seven very special, ordinary men. Somehow producer-director Tom Cas-ciato and Moyers made their inobtrusive way into a story with a human face, and WEDNESDAY NIGHT Movies Specials Sports News Beat beta "Kojack: The Price of Justice" (8 p.m., LIF).
