Grayum, a former Mississippi State player, is playing for the Chicago Cubs' Class Double-A team in Charlotte, N.C. He is the first of the Bulldogs' heralded 1989 team to make it as far as Double-A. "I feel lucky to be up here," Grayum said. "It was more of a surprise than anything else.

I started working out with the Double-A team, but I thought they'd move me down a level. I hit the ball pretty well, and they decided not to move me." Other players drafted off State's 1989 team (which was 54-14 and took part in the NCAA South Regional) are relief pitcher Pete Young, outfielder Jody Hurst, shortstop Brad Hildreth and catcher Barry Winford. All four are playing Class A ball. If there were Vegas odds on which of the five players would make it to Double-A ball first, Grayum would likely have been the longshot. Grayum had the lowest batting average (.276) and suffered through a late-season slump.

But he also had a school-record 25-game hitting "I'm glad to be here (Double-A)," Grayum said. "I know I want to stay here or move up. They (Cubs officials) don't tell you much. I have to hit to stay here, I do know that. I think I'm still a couple years away from getting my shot (at the majors)." Grayum, who is playing mostly left field, was hitting .254 10 days ago before slumping to .222 with three homers in 36 games.

He hasn't committed an error. He hit two homers in a series at Memphis. "I'm pleased with how I'm doing," he said. "This is a big step up from Class A. I like playing left field, that's where I played at State.

But as long as I'm here, or moving up, I don't care where I play." TEXAS LEAGUE STATISTICS good numbers. I talked to Pete (Young) the other day. His ERA was like 1-something and he was 5-0." Young is at Class A West Palm Beach (Expos). Hurst is at Lakeland (Tigers) and Winford at Gasto-nia (Rangers). Hildreth was recently moved up from low A to high A at Wausau (Orioles).

He turned his fortunes around when he got to Class A Geneva iast summer, hitting .290 with eight homers and 33 RBIs. He also hit well during the abbreviated spring training and earned a spot in Double-A.

"I'm sure some people are surprised I was the first one (to make Double-A)," Grayum said. "Everybody wants to make it. Everybody looks forward to moving up. MONROE MAT1C PLUS SHOCKS The Clarion-Ledger WICHITA, Kan. Angelo Cuevas' grand slam high-; lighted a six-run seventh inning Saturday night, and Jackson took a 6-2 Texas League victory over Wichita.

The Mets have won three of four games in the series and are 4-5 on the road trip. Today's series finale begins at 2:15 p.m. Mets starter Rocky Elli, 2-3, gave up a first-inning solo home run to Dean Kelley, but it proved the Wranglers' only hit in six innings against him. The lefthander, who won for the first time since opening night, walked one and struck out three. Steve Davis led off the Mets' seventh with a single.

He stole second base and eventually scored on Javier Gonzalez' bloop single. The catcher ended an 0-for-16 slump. An error and Howie Freiling's single loaded the bases. Wranglers starter Jeremy Hernandez, 3-1, walked Chuck Carr to give the Mets the lead. After Rich Holsman relieved Hernandez, Cuevas drove an 0-2 pitch over the wall.

The Mets' left fielder extended his hitting streak to seven games. Wichita scored an unearned run off Aguedo Vasquez in the eighth. Vasquez gained his first save with three innings of work. Alex Jimenez, 7-for-10 in the series, had 3 of the Mets' 11 hits. Wranglers third baseman Greg David went 0-for-3, snapping a 24-game hitting streak.

It was only the third time in 22 games that the Mets were able to win after their opponent scored first. The Wranglers are in first place in the Western Division, and the Mets are in last place in the East. Mets outfielder Terry McDaniel has been placed on the disabled list with a hamstring cramp. 24 95 EACH INSTALLED Provides quicker, more consistant response to rough and uneven roads.
