GwtftiE Business 8-12 (856) 486-2424 Home not sweet for Phils By MICHAEL RADANO Courier-Post Staff PHILADELPHIA The faces of Aaron Rowand and Jon Lieber spoke much louder than words ever could. In the locker room Rowand quietly watched his former team, the Chicago White Sox, locked in a scoreless tie with Minnesota as Jim Thome stepped to the plate. Just below the TV stood Lieber, quietly recounting his fourth loss in as many starts. Almost on cue, Thome the key piece in the trade that brought Rowand to Philadelphia launched his eighth home run of the year to give the White Sox the lead.

"It sucks," Lieber said. He wasn't talking about the home run by Thome, who is light years removed from this franchise. Instead, Lieber's disgust focused on himself and his team's miserable start to 2006. Florida rookie Scott Olsen scattered eight hits as the Marlins beat the Phillies 4-3 in front of 20,277 at Citizens Bank Park Friday night. The loss dropped the Phillies to 6-10 and their record at home to an embarrassing 2-8.

They barely stayed ahead of Florida (5-10) in the race for the cellar of the National League East. "Everything is about timing, whether you like it or not," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We couldn't score any runs. When you're going like this you can't make mistakes and we can't overcome them." Mistakes have come to the Phillies in abundance this year and Friday night was no exception. Despite a strong start to the game, Lieber left down 4-0.

Coming off a miserable result in Colorado in which he allowed seven runs on 10 hits in a 10-6 loss, Lieber cruised through 4V3 perfect innings before Mike Jacobs doubled. After Lieber picked up the second out of the inning, Reggie Abercrombie doubled just inside the third base line to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Lieber then gave up too much of the plate and No. 8 hitter Matt Treanor with first base open singled to score Abercrombie from second. "I've said this over my career but we're only 16 games in," said Lieber, who allowed six hits and struck out eight without a walk.

"A lot of people think our record is 2-14 but we're 6-10. Yeah, we'd like to be 106 but right now we're not We have to keep our heads up and get things going." Driving to Richmond, and its prestigious Jefferson Cup soccer tournament last month, Pete Hatton suspected his Highland Fever team of 11-and 12-year-old boys would do well. What he didn't know was how well. "We had a good feeling going down there, but you never know," said the 41-year-old head coach and Sicklerville resident.

"We had the experience of playing there last season, but you just never know." He does now. After shutting out Herndon, 4-0, Highland went on to eke out a 3-2 win over Raleigh-Durham, N.C., defeated Som-mers, N.Y., 3-1 and topped Lan- caster, 3-1. That last win, the one against the Pennsylvania State Champs, gave Highland first place in the tournament's U-12 boys "Elite" division. Last year, Hatton's U-ll team reached the semifinals only to lose in double overtime.
