ober The Clarion-Ledger I Wednesday, December 20, 1989 JACKSON-AREA A DEATHS Charles E. Sylvester, retired businessman By Sidney Cearnal Clarion-Ledger Obituary Writer Charles E. Sylvester, 63, of No. 1 Sylwood Place, a retired business owner and heart transplant recipient, died Sunday of pancreatitis at McGuire Memorial Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Va. Services are 11 a.m.

Thursday at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home with burial in Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today. Mr. Sylvester, a Sharkey County native, had lived in the Jackson area most of his life.

He was former owner of Jackson Roofing and Sheet Metal Co. He was forced to retire because of heart trouble and began farming in Attala County. On June 14, 1986, he received a heart transplant at McGuire Memorial Veterans Hospital. Mr. Sylvester was at first turned down for a donor heart but finally convinced officials he should be a recipient, said his daughter, Becky Allen of Jackson.

"He was real determined. If I had to say anything about him, I'd say he had the best fighting spirit of anybody I knew," Allen said. the time, he was the oldest (at 59) person to receive a transplant here," said Josephine Hanrahan, transplant coordinator at the hospital. "He was really a nice person. Most of our old patients form a close knit group.

He had a positive outlook on things," she said. Allen said she hopes other people will respond to pleas for organ donors as a Richmond family did in 1986 when Mr. Sylvester received his new heart. "That was very loving on their part. They gave him an opportunity to see grandchildren that he never would have seen," she said.

LOUIS The bodies of three missing Gulfport youths were found Tuesday afternoon huddled in a 12-foot plastic foam boat 10 miles south of here. Gulfport Police Detective Steve Barnes said the boys, apparently victims of hypothermia, were: Thomas Jerome Smith, 14, who was wearing jeans and a jean jacket. I Shane Michael Porter, 13, who was wearing jeans and a lightweight red and black jacket.

I Stephen King, 9, who was wearing jeans and a blue sweatshirt. "It appears that the three just got into a boat and drifted out" into the Gulf of Mexico, Barnes said. He said the three were last seen ashore shortly before noon Monday and were reportedly sighted near the Gulfport harbor aboard the small boat at about 1 p.m. Barnes said the youths lived near each other in Gaston Point, a lowincome neighborhood of West Gulfport. The youths' parents reported them missing to Gulfport police between 8-11 a.m.

Tuesday. The parents identified the bodies PSC Bay St. Louis Tuesday evening. "As it appears now, we don't suspect any foul play," Barnes said Tuesday night. Hancock County Sheriff Ronnie Peterson said officials speculate the three either died of hypothermia or drowned.

"The children were found with about a foot of water in the boat and they were clinging together," Peterson said. Autopsies are scheduled today to determine the exact cause of death, he said. Peterson said officials have not determined who owns the boat or why the three were in it. "We have the boat in custody, but we're going to have to do an investigation to determine where the boat came from." The boat, which was without a sail or paddles when found, was sighted shortly before noon Tuesday by a passing sailboat, authorities said. They said the sailboat sent a message to a tugboat which relayed the message to the Coast Guard's Gulfport rescue station.

"We went there and confirmed that all three were deceased," said Coast Guard 1st Class Petty Officer James Stanbro.
