Attendance From staff and wirt reports Okoye wins AFC honor in vote of NFLPA peers Kansas City Chiefs running back Christian Okoye has been named the American Football Conference's player of the year in a vote of National Football League Players Association AFC members conduct- edby USA Today. "The awards keep coming, and I just can't believe it," said Okoye, a native of Enugu, Nigeria, who lives in Claremont, Calif. "This latest award is very spe-i cial, because my peers vote on it." Okoye became the first Chiefs running back to lead the NFL in rushing. He carried a team-record and 370 times for 1,480 yards, beating Detroit rookie Barry Sanders by 10 yards, i Seattle Seahawks linebacker Rufus Porters was voted special teams player of the year.

Cincinnati Bengals tackle Anthony Munoz was voted offensive lineman of the year. Denver Broncos running back Bobby Humphrey was voted offensive rookie of the year. The Alabama alumnus rushed for 1,151 yards in the regular season. Buffalo Bills end Bruce Smith was voted defensive player of the year. Kansas City linebacker Derrick iThomas was voted defensive rookie of the year.

Kansas City comerback Albert Lewis was voted defensive back of the year. The Sporting News names All-Pro toam: Quarterback Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers is the player of the year and running back Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions the only rookie on an All-Pro team picked by The Sporting News, a weekly publi- cation. Montana's selection to the team is his first in ,11 NFL seasons. San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice, a former Mississippi Valley star, was chosen for the fourth straight year. Robbie eulogized: Miami Dolphins founder Joe Robbie received tribute at his funeral Wednesday as a dreamer who realized his goals and helped unify a troubled city. Robbie, 73, died Sunday night after a lengthy bout with a respiratory ailment.

About 500 mourners attended the funeral, including U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and executives from 10 other NFL teams. LA Coliseum may meet wrecking ball: The first official step was taken to demolish the historic Los Angeles Coliseum in order to keep the Los Angeles Raiders from leaving or, if they do leave, to attract another football franchise. The Coliseum is a city landmark and the only stadium to host two modem day Olympics.

Gumble to resume golf coverage Bryant Gumble, the anchor of the Today show on NBC since 1982, will return to NBC Sports next weekend as host of its golf coverage.
