Dr. Claude C. Williams, unfrocked as a Presby terian minister on charges of heresy and the preaching of Communism, was one of the seven "whitewash" ministers who visited Tito's Yugoslavia in 1949. A commission or live rresDy- terian ministers and four laymen found Dr. Williams guilty of heresy on three counts but dismissed the Communism charge on "technical grounds." The Presbyterian action was one step short of excommunication, it declared that Dr.

Williams was no longer an ordained minister and unable to perform any of the functions of a Presbyterian minister. As early as 1944, the House Committee on Un-American Ac tivities declared that Williams had been "most active in the Communist Party for many years."
