Qualifying For National Open Begins If Tkt Auocitttd freu Touring pros George Archer and Howie Johnson were among the pacesetters Monday as golf- ers in 38 states and the District of Columbia began qualifying play for the U.S. Open Champi- onship next month. Professionals and amateurs seeking berths in the Open, to be played at San Francisco's Olympic Country Club June 16- 19. teed off at 57 locations in the 36-holc local qualifying rounds. The low scorers will move up to 13 sectionals June 6-7, with the eventual survivors filling out the field of 150 at San Francis- co.

Several Pros On List Most of the top names in golf are exempt from the prelimi- nary rounds, but several play- ers on the 1966 pro tour quali- fied Monday. Archer, who played in last week's Colonial Invitational at Fort Worth, paced thej qualifiers at Dallas, with a 68-70--138. Don Massengale. Charles Coody. George Bayer and Jerry Edwards also ad- vanced from Dallas to the sec- tionals.

Johnson, a 10-year veteran from St. Paul, led the day's biggest advance 38 pros qualified at Oklahoma Cityj with a 68-69--137. Homero Blancas, Charles Sif- ford, Al Besselink, Bob Goalby, Jack Rule, Joe Carr and Juan (Chi Chi) Rodriguez trailed Johnson but made the cut-off in the field of 104. Cudd Has Best Score Bruce Cudd of Portland. blazed a 70-65--135 over a par 36 layout to pace Portland qualifi ers and record the day's best score.

Bob Duden also made the grade at Portland with a 141. Tom Bartolec, a 45-year-old former club pro who had played only one round this year before entering the Pittsburgh tourney, matched Cudd's 65 on his first round and followed up with a par 72 for 137. Other low scorers included Al Menger, 137 at Tacoma, Walter Romans, 137 at Balti- more; Joe Taylor, 139 at Cincin nati; Larry Mowry, 137 at San Diego, and Harry Tosca no 139 at Pittsburgh. All are professionals. Bob Huber, a 17-year-old high school senior from Lititz, carded a 72-73--145 for one oi three qualifying spots at Harris burg.

Pa. Veteran Skee Riegel advanced with a 147 at Lafayette Hills, and Dick Davies, a former British Amateur champion now living in La Costa, quali- fied at San Diego. Among the prominent casual- ties were Rex Baxter Jr. and former major league pitcher Lou Kretlow, at Oklahoma City, and ex-hockey star Bill Ezin- icki, knocked out of the Sharon, qualifying round with a wrist injury. Costello was given pills to deaden the pain, and the toe on his takeoff foot was taped and numbed by medication. "It rained most of the day, and I had to cut my approach in half," Costello said. "I couldn't get enough momentum. I felt good despite the pain, and I think I may have cleared seven feet except for the rain." Costello has tapered off on his toe, whoch he soaks five times a day.

Nothing New For Frank Competing in the IC4A meet a bit under the weather is nothing new for Costello. He won with a 6-10 leap last year after suf- fering with the flu for a week. "But the most important thing in the IC4A is to win," Costello said. "I don't care if the high is 6-6. Costello believes his main competition will come from Eli- jah Miller or Rutgers and Chris Pardee of Harvard.

Miller has been a jumping foe of Costello's ever since high school days in New Jersey Miller at Trenton and Costello at Union. Costello cleared 7-1 in a dual DP--Pittsburgh Los Angeles 6. 1.
