3F Sunday, February 7, 1982 The Clarion-Ledger Jackson Daily News 1960's I in '82 main fresh, powerfu mm, meters re. On Music If Peter Cetera wants to become a successful solo artist I'm sure he'll make it He has talent determination, connections, and the gold records to back up any tf his future plans. Somehow, somewhere there has to be room for an artist as talented as Peter Cetera. "ANYONE CAN SEE" by Irene Cara (Network Asylum) An example of a talented individual who is being misused in the recording studio is Irene Cara, a young lady who at the age (On Music is a weekly attempt to keep up with the record industry. Ratings are as follows: "fair, 'poor.) best records of the late 60's and contained not only some excellent and arrangements, but also some timely social statements, spawned from the student unrest of the period.

Chicago was a band in the old sense of the word. A group of college students from Chicago consisted of drummer Daniel Seraphine, guitarist Terry Kath, bassistsinger Peter Cetera, keyboardist Robert Lamm, trombonist James Pankow, trumpet player Lee Loughnane, and reeds player Walter Para-zaider. The band lived and worked together and their close-knit personal lives were reflected in their tightly arranged and performed music. Cetera, Kath and Seraphine provided a hard rock rhythm section, Lamm was the musical director, and the horns completed a sound which confounded music programmers. Most of the songwriting and singing were provided by of 22 is already a star of stage, screen, and television.

KM- i'3 By BROWN BURNETT Jncksoe Dally News EnterUtniiMt Editor Pestilence and an overdose of country music claimed your loyal critic last week, so, in a makeup effort, let's journey into yesteryear to get a closer look at today. "TRUCE," by Jack Bruce and Robin Trower (Chrysalis) One of the giants of 1960's rock music is currently making a quiet and impressive comeback while teaming with an underrated musician who has always been in the shadows of rock and roll. Such is the case with Bruce and Trower, whose second album together is as good as their first, which was one of the surprises of last year. Bruce has rediscovered his talent and desire for playing rock and roll and also blues. Trower, who has labored under some less-than flattering criticism, is proving himself to be not only flashy, but also an intelbgent and tasteful, guitarist Together the two play the best music they have made in almost a decade.

Jack Bruce is best remembered as a founder of the supergroup Cream, but he was also a major figure in England's rockblues movement in the early 1960's. A premier bassist, then and now, Bruce was part of a musical scene which spawned such groups as the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, and various early blues fusion bands. When he, Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker formed Cream in 1967, rock and roll history was made. But Bruce had trouble living up to his Cream days and his music for the next 10 years or so seemed to lack dedication and energy. Robin Trower is another English rock veteran and he did his early labors as the guitar player for Procul Harum, a band whose experiments into classical rock eventually caused Trower to become a solo act He hired a band, including a sing-er and was incorrectly dubbed by the rock press as a "Jimi Hendrix clone." Actually Trower's playing style was his own.

Much of Trower's work is more graceful and smoother than the Hendrix comparisons, and, after all, there was only one Jimi Hendrix. No one is more aware of that than Robin Trower. "Truce's" best quality is its extraordinarily clean arrangements, many of which consist only of Bruce on bass and vocals, Trower on guitar, and Reg Isidore on drums. On the album we hear a subtle Robin Trower and an energetic Jack Bruce. The record contains a few hints of Bruce wanting to return to a jazz fusion, but these efforts only enhance the record.

Overall, "Truce" is an interesting, and well-performed album which will surprise followers of both Bruce and Trower. Their first album is also worth checking out if you missed it 1 i ChryMlis Records JACK BRUCE, ROBIN TROWER Although her appearance in the movie Fame is given credit for making her a star, she is actually an old hand at song and dance. At the age of 10 she sang with Sammy Davis Jr. in a salute to Duke Ellington. She was also a star of TV's Electric Company when she was 12.

Irene saved her pennies and dimes and decided to become an actress. But with an album such as "Anyone Can See," her singing career is getting off to an awkward start. As with so many recording artists, Cara's main problem lies is her producer. The effervescent Ron Dante obviously wanted to play it safe so he decided to drown her with studio effects and dull material. So instead of her magnificent singing voice she sounds like she's doing a soft drink commercial.

Poor planning all around is typified by the opening cut Reach Out, I'll Be There, a song which has been done by so many people so many times it should be retired by everyone except the Four Tops, who did the original. We also never get to hear her change emotion and the album is void of any tender or poignant moments, mainly just middle of the road pop stuff. I saw Irene Cara on TV performing for the Academy Awards broadcast last year and she is a dynamite perfomer. This album is a crying shame. "TOM TOM CLUB" by Tom Tom Club (SireWarner) The Tom Tom Club is actually the moonlighting rhythm section of the Talking Heads and it's one of the more interesting albums of the year.

The Heads were, and still are, one of the most unique bands to spring from the so-called "New Wave" movement of five or six years ago and here we see two of the reasons for their success. Drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth comprise one of the few husbandwife rhythm sections around and that's what the Tom Tom Club is all about percussion and rhythms with a few chants thrown in for good measure. I The album takes some getting used to but it is intriguing without being pretentious. Certainly Head fans will enjoy it Nice escape. Cetera and Terry Kath was also active in those early days.

The result was one of the first, and finest crossover bands of the 1970's. This release is a good example of some of their more adult-oriented material such as Cetera's superb It You Leave Me Now, Baby, What a Big Surprise, and Happy Man. Also there is a song from their 1969 CTA album, Questions 67 and 68, again sung by Cetera, which is a hard-rock contrast to the other more mellow songs. Chicago made, and still makes, "adult radio" tolerable for those of us who aren't quite ready for pre-fab Barbara Man-drell sound and Lawrence Welk. "Vol.

makes you long for the old Chicago and the "old days." "PETER CETERA" by Peter Cetera (Full MoonWarner) And now to Peter Cetera, the aforementioned bass player and vocalist for Chicago. His album is one of the better solo albums around and once you listen to it you'll quickly see why Chicago was so popular for so long. Cetera has an excellent singing voice one which is high-pitched without losing its strength. He is a powerful vocalist with a gift for interpretation and the album makes good use of not only his singing, but also bis excellent bass playing and I songwriting. 1 Another surprise about his album is the fact that there are no members of Chicago playing on it.

There is only one song which uses horns and the other tunes are primarily middle-of-the-road rock numbers. These contain an extremely heavy bass line, provided by Cetera, and some fine guitar playing from Chris Pinnick who was a session player on the last Chicago album. Songs such as Livin'In the Limelight, and On the Line, are reminiscent of early Chicago Transit Authority, sans horns, and Cetera also has a nice ballad touch with Not Afraid to Cry. "CHICAGO'S GREATEST HITS, Vol. II" (Columbia) Another group of musicians who influenced the music of the 1970's is Chicago.

But unlike Trower and Bruce, Chicago is currently in a state of limbo, primarily due to the tragic death of guitarist Terry Kath, for whom they have found no replacement But how many groups can release, not one, but two greatest hits albums and still make the second one a pretty decent record? Chicago's songs, and sound, are still excellent even though some of the songs are more than 10 years old. Despite their many gold records and sellout concerts, Chicago's contribution to rock music of the 70's, and 80's, is often overlooked much as Trower's and Bruce's contributions'are passed over. Chicago was originally known as Chicago Transit Authority and they were the first band to make horns an integral part of their musical personality and keep it that way. Their first album, "Chicago Transit Authority," was one of the i VERY 1QW. This album is of a slighty different nature then most for it contains a tree of the family's musical history starting in 1933 as well as interviews with the Salem major and mom and pop Dillard (Lorene and Homer). Because of the interviews, the album is not completely music. But the music is good with some old, traditional tunes and Dillard orginals. (Flying Fish Records) SONGS OF LOVE AND PARTING, by Robin Williamson: Williamson has put this album together with mainly his own arrangements and music; a very Scotish Irish sound that moves at a very slow tempo. The somber sound of most of the album is further enhanced with song titles such as The Parting Class, Flower of the Briar, and The Forming of Blodeuwedd.

He does make interesting use of some of the more traditional instruments such as hammer dulcimer, harpsicord, Scottish bagpipes, hunting horns, as well as violin, viola and cello. (Flying Fish Records). IN THE TRADITION, By the Boys of the Lough: The album title contains the word tradition' which is exactly what one gets with this one Traditional IrishScotish music with a good mix of jigs, reels, song, and hornpipes. The music is primarily very old and are in-strumentals except for the two songs which are strictly vocals. The group makes use of such instruments as fiddle, flute, whistle, mandolin, cittern, banjo, guitar, and acoustic bass.

This is their ninth album. (Flying Fish Records). STAY, by Ray, Goodman and Brown: Back in the early '70's when they were formerly known as The Moments, such tunes as Love on a Two-Way Street, Sexy Mama, went straight to the top of the charts. Stay features 10 outstanding selections of sensuous love songs. Harry Ray, Al Goodman, (a native Mls-sissippian) and Billy Brown continues to deliver sweet soul music to the old as well as the new followers alike.

(Polygram Records). LOVE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT, by the Whispers: This group has been around the record business for more than a decade with its sweet harmony and fancy footsteps. The Whispers have put together such tunes as I Only Meant Just To Wet My Feet, of old, and their first gold single, And The Beat Goes On, of new. The Whispers are vastly becoming a very popular group on the stage as well as off. Their new release Love Is Where You Find It is a whole new dimension of their style.
