NIGHT By Will Jones Space Machine? It's Hush-Hush While newscaster dramatist John Ford of WTCN TV was muttering darkly about pinball machines in St. Paul, sister channel 11 station WMIN-TV was having its own time with pinball machines. WMIN-TV is going to start a new kid show called "Captain 11," in which a guy in a space outfit will play around with a machine he calls a time converter. Chief engineer Warren Fritze was assigned to design and construct the time converter. He came over to Minneapolis, walked into a distributor's place, picked up a couple of much-used pinball boards for $15 each without any questions asked, put together a whee of a time machine.

As a gag, the WMIN-TV peoplea made a top-secret, hushhush project of the machine. "Don't let John Ford get wind of this," they whispered to each other in the corridors. AT THE SAME time Ford was being so mysterious about where he got the pinball machines he demonstrated on his newscasts, Billboard magazine has done yearsto run full ads showing bright, shiny new pin ball machines. Several dozen firms freely advertise all kinds of pin games for sale. PRIVADE ASIDE to public investigator Ford: When you're satisfied that you've got the pinball situation cleaned up, I wish you'd look into stamp machines.

I've been playing them for years, and have yet to get any kind of a payoff. But the percentages, it seems to me, are big sign: "Hollywood Delicates sen. Brightener: Hollywood TV columnist Leo Guild wrote it: "There are all kinds of viewers and never forget it. Asked our newspaper delivery what TV shows he liked. Said he likes actors who imitate Jerry Lewis.

Asked I him if he liked Jerry Lewis. He said no." Day Spoiler: Dialog from the Ed gar Bergen Charlie McCarthy radio show: BERGEN. "You don't even know what opera is?" Missionary Says Shintoism Being Revived in Japan Shintoism, a religion built on the philosophy of expansion by military might, is being revived in Japan today and revival is "foreboding," the Rev. John M. L.

Young said Thursday. Shintoism was the "chief instrument used to unite Japan before Pearl Harbor," Mr. Young explained. Japanese lost faith in it after the war, he said, but now the older people are returning to it with their children. Mr.

Used to be you could get nine cents worth of stamps for a dime, but lately I've come across a few that yield only eight cents worth. The specialdelivery stamp slot is a real loser. For a quarter you get only a 20-cent stamp.

It used to be they'd throw in an odd two or three cent stamp with a special delivery stamp so the buyer needn't take a full nickel loss. Short Ones Rupert LaBelle, late of the Old Log theater and Bob DeHaven's "Show Boat," is in Chicago with a four-month contract as an actor on "Hawkins Falls." THE NEW YORKER magazine's movie critic, John McCarten, said Rita Hayworth in "Sadie Thompson" reminded him of a wholesome, healthy 4-H girl- even in that supposedly wicked dance. OF ALL CARTOONS making fun of 3-D and CinemaScope, there's one in a recent issue of the same magazine that's one of the best I've seen. It shows a producer and a few assistants watching the rushes of a CinemaScope spectacle in a private screening room. The big, curved screen is filled with action chariots, swordplay, mobs, big sets with marble columns, and confusion all over the landscape.

The producer 1s signaling to the projectionist and saying "Hold it!" Careful inspection of the busy screen turns up the reason for his concern: 'way over in the left corner, just within camera range, is a small store with a WCCO Radio CBS RADIO 830 ON YOUR DIAL IMPORTANT NEWS! Douglas Young, is dean of Northwestern Theological seminary in Minneapolis. Mr. John Young will speak at seminaries and churches here this week end. He quoted a Shinto priest as saying the immediate postwar period was "Christianity's day of opportunity" because of the "religious vacuum" then. However, Shintoism rose again in popularity after Emperor Hirohito began attending Shinto rites in 1952, Mr.

Young said. Shintoism recognizes emperors as descendants of a goddess. HIGH SCHOOL and collegeage Japanese, the only group in which Shintoism has not not made significant advances, is "going for communism," Mr. Young said. "Christianity is not losing ground, but it never had very much," he said.

However, he said, the cause of Christianity is aided by freedom of religion which was not present when Shintoism was compulsory in pre-Pearl Harbor days. "Japan is the most advanced nation in the Far East," Mr. Young asserted, "and Japanese thinking will influence the County Board to Get Suburban Fire Radio Plan Plans for a radio network linking rural and suburban fire departments in Hennepin county will be put before the county board when it meets next week. The board chairman, George Matthews, said tentative plans have been drafted by a committee representing various rural and suburban communities, outlining procedures and costs. The plan, briefly, would call for each municipality to buy the mobile equipment needed for its fire rigs, about $500 each, and pay the county $150 a year to maintain the transmitter and service the equipment.

The radio sets would belong to the county, Matthews said, and the county would administer the network. Actual dispatching and handling of radio calls would be done at the sheriff's radio transmitting station in Golden Valley. A transmitter which can be used on the proper fire department frequency alis owned by the county, Matthews explained. Chairman of the advisory committee was Royce Owens. Golden Valley.

Members are Owens; John Gedney, Excelsior; Howard Hegberg, Hopkins; Dan Elmer, Osseo; Bowers, Mound, and Matthews. The costs per year would be reviewed annually by the county board, Matthews said, to determine whether there should be either an increase or a drop in cost.
