Softball ESS MC i-1 mm mi iWMN NAVIGATOR 8: winners added two more in the seventh on Danielle Dolbow's RBI single and a wild pitch. "We felt, at the beginning of the season, that this was the team that might win a state title," said Bacon, who has a 272-39 record in 13 seasons at Pennsville. The Lady Eagles were 23-2 last year, but lost to Northern Burlington in the South Jersey Group 2 final. "We had five seniors back, including Bridget, from last year's team, so we we knew we had a good chance.

"Although Bridget is our main person, everybody on this team has come through for us at different times during the year. "Still, there's no way to describe Bridget. She's the No. 1 asset for our program." Pennsville took a 1-0 lead in the top of second inning when Kelly DiCarolis walked and moved around to third on an error. Colleen McCaffery got the run home when she beat out a bunt hit.

The 11-time Tri-County Conference Royal Division champions scored three more in the third inning on Bridget McCaffery's RBI single, DiCarolis' RBI triple and a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead. Pennsvile scored two more in the fifth on Colleen McCaffery's fielders' choice RBI and a wild pitch. By JOEY CULLIGAN Courier-Post Staff EWING The Pennsville High School softball program has won 272 games over the past 13 seasons. But on Saturday Coach Herb Bacon's club gained the victory it wanted more than any other and the one which had eluded it the longest. Unbeaten Pennsville, 25-0 and the No.

1-ranked team in the Courier-Post, walloped formerly unbeaten North Jersey champion Jefferson 9-2 at Trenton State College to win the school's first state Group 2 title. The Lady Eagles, winners of 27 in row the past two seasons, became the first South Jersey champion to win the state Group 2 title since Hammonton in 1986. Pennsville was making its second appearance in a state title game after losing to Lenape Valley in 1991. Pennsville's incomparable senior righhander Bridget McCaf-fery, 21-0, fired a five-hitter against the Morris County school, which went into the game with a 21-0 record and was led by pitcher Colleen Ginolfi, who had all 21 decisions. "We just seemed to hit the ball a little better today and score a little earlier than we usually do which took a lot of pressure off us," said McCaffery, who struck out five of the first six batters she faced and finished with seven strikeouts and no walks.

She also contributed an RBI single and scored a run on offense. "Everybody really wanted this game because (Pennsville) had never won a state title before. This means an awful lot to me and is definitely one of the top things we've done this year. "But this is second to beating Camden Catholic (2-1 in eight innings in Hammonton Invitational final) because that game was a lot tougher." Jefferson, also seeking its first state title, scored two runs off McCaffery in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-2. By JOEY CULLIGAN Courier-Post Staff EWING It was going to take a very good pitcher to stop the Washington Township High School softball team from winning a state Group 4 title on Saturday. And Clifton's Dana DeVito proved to be just that pitcher. DeVito limited Township's potent offense to just a pair of singles as the North Jersey champions downed Coach Mickey Shaw's team 7-1 at Trenton State College to win the school's first state group crown. The 5-10 junior righthander struck out seven and walked two. After giving up an infield hit to Crystal Feo in the fifth inning, DeVito retired the final seven Township hitters she faced.

"I knew their pitcher (DeVito) was good, but we face a lot of good pitching all the time (in South Jersey) and I thought we would hit her too," said Shaw, whose team won the school's first and last state Group 4 title in 1985. "But Clifton beat some very good teams to get here and they really hit the ball. They were definitely the best hitting team we saw this year." Township, 23-4, now needs to defeat Highland in the team's finale on Tuesday to clinch a share of the Olympic Conference American Division title with Overbrook. DeVito said she had no idea about the strength of Township's lineup, which has terrorized South Jersey pitchers all season. "I'm not surprised at all how well we said DeVito.

"We didn't know anything about them, but we just know we've been playing well." Clifton Coach Richard LaDuke said he simply told DeVito to keep the ball inside on the Township hitters. "Dana is a power pitcher and all she has to do to win is pound the ball in there close," said LaDuke, whose team lost in the 1989 Group 4 title game to Edison. "Dana is a polished pitcher who did the same thing to West Milford when they were unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state." Clifton's offense was just as strong as DeVito's arm, banging out nine hits against sophomore losing pitcher Kellie Alexander, who went into the title game with a 21-3 record. The Bergen County squad, 24-7, scored four runs on hits in the bottom of the second inning and added two more runs in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Township scored its lone run in the fourth inning when Lisa Quinn singled, eventually moving to third with a stolen base and a wild pitch, and scored on an error. "I don't think we ever felt the game was over or we were dead when we got down, but today was just not our day," said Shaw, who will lose four seniors off the current squad. "We've got a good nucleus of players coming back next year and we'll just take this game and build on it for next year." IKAUSI SO MUCH IS UMNO ON YOUR TIRES. WITH "VALUE PLUS" v. "But all his coaches that I've talked to have stressed how he projects leadership ability in a quiet way." Though he fancies himself the man of the house, Wyche will have to make an adjustment when he hits the Wolfpack campus and becomes little more than a number at the university.

But as usual, Wyche is ahead of the game. "I'm trying to go down there in the summer so I can take some courses," Wyche said. "And as far as football is concerned, I want to redshirt my first year so I can concentrate on my books." It is a typical response from Damon Wyche, football player, big brother, church regular and role model. And even though he won't have to make the walk anymore, Dorothy Wyche will miss the self-proclaimed "Man of the House" when he leaves for school. "I always prayed for him and his brother when I knew they were coming home late," she said.

"It was such a relief once they got inside. "Damon has helped make my job as a mother much easier than it could have been. He's the ideal son." Wyche says. "He saw that I was able to get good grades, and he saw how hard I worked to get my grades. I think him seeing me accomplish things has helped to motivate him to do the same type of things." Wyche is considered a role model by most who know him," said Wyche's honors British Literature teacher, Richard King.

"He is very competitive at getting grades. He shows the same kind of competitiveness in the classroom that he shows on the football field. "He is a role model. Unlike (Michael) Jordan and (Charles) Barkley, people who most of the younger kids here at Camden High will never come in contact with, they see Damon working very hard on the field and in class. I'd want my son to grow up to be just like him." A member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Wyche's minister, the Rev.

James C. Jones, speaks highly of him. "He is an extraordinary person," said Jones. "He is kind, courteous, quiet and unassuming. He comes from a very spiritual family." Admittedly a quiet person, Wyche radiates a positive image.

"Getting him to talk is like pull Continued from Page 1F Educator's Award, and he has been active in the Philadelphia and Camden Clean Sweep programs. Wyche adheres to a rigid formula which he believes has been pivotal to his academic success. "I've always made it a habit to study my hard courses first," said Wyche. "Especially physics and calculus. Once I get them out of the way, then I'll study some of my easier classes.

Really, it isn't hard." But sometimes during the gruelling football season, Wyche admits that he did take a short cut now and then. "Sometimes when I came back from football practice, I was too tired to study so I'd just take the night off. But usually, I just motivated myself to do the work." His mother, Dorothy Wyche Gland, is a single parent raising two sons Damon, 18, and his 15-year-old brother, David. Wyche, also a center fielder and team captain on the Camden baseball team, feels a strong sense of obligation to his brother. "David saw what it was like for me while I was being recruited," In Mb.
