6A COURIER-POST, Saturday, December 26, 1 992 Additional states search for killer of Marlton woman Theories: Authorities say the death may be a serial killing and the killer may live in the Ozarks in Southwest Missouri. wanted anonymity posted $100,000 in November, bringing hope to family and friends looking for the killer. "We believe the offer is the largest single reward ever offered by a single individual," said Philadelphia-area attorney Mark Goldberg, who represents the donor. "My client has no interest in publicity for himself. But everybody has a hot button, right? Some want to save the whales, others want to preserve the rain forests.

This guy wants to see the person who killed this girl caught." Still, investigators have plenty of reasons not to hold their breath. Rewards not beneficial "We're hoping it will be helpful but our experience has been that rewards haven't been beneficial and the information doesn't come forward," Brignadello cautioned. "But it doesn't backfire, it's just that no one has any information." For reference, there's the case of three missing Springfield women, Suzie Streeter, Sherrill Levitt and Stacy McCall, whose $47,000 reward posted by private donors for information leading to their discovery hasn't yielded a case-ending tip. Several crime experts including By CHRISTOPHER CLARK Gannett News Service Southwest Missouri is gaining attention as the possible home to an elusive killer, as the region joins a growing list of states chasing the slayer of a Marlton college student. Four months ago, 21-year-old Tammy Zywicki of Marlton vanished on her way from Illinois to Iowa's Grinnell College.

Her white, 1985 Pontiac was discovered along Interstate 80 near La Salle, 111., in August, nine days before a motorist found her body wrapped mummy-style near a westbound on-ramp of Interstate 44 east of Sarcoxie. She was stabbed eight times two wounds punctured her lung, one hit her liver. Now, authorities in at least three states continue their investigation a portion of it fixed on a theory that says the killer may live in the Ozarks. 'A ton of theories' "There are a ton of theories out there but we are seriously looking at one that involves southwestern Missouri," said Lt. Harold Brigna-dello of the Illinois State Police, which assigned 14 investigators to Zywicki's mother, Jo Ann.

She told reporters that authorities were giving credence to a link between her daughter's death and a spate of recent killings in Ohio and Wisconsin. "I've been told if a person kills three people in separate incidents, he's a serial killer," Jo Ann Zywicki said. "Their motives aren't the same, however. But then again, I've had someone say that these things don't always happen the same way. That's why I just can't feel that it's not a serial killer." Said Brignadello: "The mere fact that this case hasn't been solved means that a serial killer could well be involved.

We haven't put any emphasis on that over anything else. But that's not to say that over a few months, we wouldn't start leaning that way." The Zywickis don't know where to lean. "We don't know what scares us worse: one person killing these people or all different people killing," Zywicki said. Large private bounty Tammy Zywicki's death triggered perhaps the largest private bounty in recent history. A Philadelphia-area man who an FBI agent who assisted the investigation said big rewards don't always develop blockbuster lead8.

"But you think to yourself, this is the kind of money that can change somebody's life," said Goldberg. "There may be someone out there who has a boyfriend she may turn in or a co-worker or something. This may bring, the case to the front of their minds." Woman and daughter found dead in apartment Associated Press CHICAGO A woman and her infant daughter were found dead in their apartment two weeks after a relative trying to check on them was turned away by guards at the public housing project, the family says. Marilyn Green, 39, and her 10-month-old daughter, Marie, had been dead for at least two Weeks when the bodies were found Wednesday night at the Stateway Gardens complex on the South Side, police said. Authorities said that autopsies did not immediately reveal the cause of death but that the infant probably starved to death.

'I the case full-time. "There are a lot of theories to entertain out there. But we are leaning toward the central United States. Take that further and some of the theories directly affect the Ozarks." Zywicki's disappearance and grim discovery attracted intense media attention from television and newspapers along the East Coast, in the Midwest and Canada. One frontburner theory poured over by cops is complex, yet sensible.

Conjecture Their conjecture goes something like this: Zywicki's body likely was dumped from a big-rig near the I-44 on-ramp at the County Road 603 overpass near Sarcoxie. Her body probably wasn't thrown from the truck's cab, investigators say, because the driver likely would have left much of his trailer in the path of traffic at the overpass, which isn't visible from nearby buildings. Instead, the truck pulled further down the on-ramp to unload the body from the trailer, which likely would have to be empty to hold the body. They believe the driver may have dumped his load and was headed home. That was possibly to the Ozarks, police say.

"There's an assumption that he didn't drag her very far," said Lawrence County Chief Investigator Doug Seneker. "He probably took her out and took her straight to where she was dumped. The logical thing would be just to dump her, rather than trying to drag her for a long distance." It's likely the contents of the trailer were never checked along the 600 miles between La Salle, 111., and Sarcoxie, largely because cargo can't be searched without reasonable suspicion by police. Serial killing? Is this a serial killing? That unusual twist was first publicized in November by A family celebrates and lives the 7 principles of Kwanzaa "In the 1960s and 1970s only a few people did Kwanzaa, mostly black nationalists," she said. "But over the years it has moved into the mainstream of the African-American community." On each night of Kwanzaa, one of seven candles in a holder is lit.

Three red ones on the right represent struggle, three green ones on the left represent the future and a black one in the middle is for African people everywhere. Many cities hold community celebrations featuring storytelling, African music and dance, and plays about black history. Gifts, preferably educational ones that are handmade, are exchanged. Kwanzaa's focus is on creativity, not purchasing power. "A child in poverty sees all the commercials and they don't have the bright, happy Christmas they see on television," said Kimi Rabun, 42.

"But a child celebrating Kwanzaa can create something." Rabun's education consulting firm, IMIK Enterprises, presents workshops on Kwanzaa for schools and organizations. Some families celebrate Kwanzaa instead of Christmas, but others celebrate both. "We're a Christian family and we still have our Christmas tree," said Lewis-Bridges, 42. But instead of sending Christmas cards, she now sends Kwanzaa cards to spread the word about the holiday. More and more black American families celebrate Kwanzaa each year, said Sundaira Morningh-ouse, author of Habari Gani: What's the a children's story about Kwanzaa.

Associated Press SEATTLE Each year after Christmas, the Bridges family dresses in vibrant yellow and red African outfits made from kente cloth, the royal fabric of Ghana, to celebrate Kwanzaa. They're among 18 million people around the world who observe the seven-day holiday that begins today. Once celebrated primarily by black nationalists, it's moving into the black American mainstream and also is observed in Canada, England and many African nations. Based on African winter harvest nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity), and imani (faith). Each year, Pamela Lewis-Bridges asks each of her four children what the principles of Kwanzaa mean to them.

Twelve-year-old Jasmine maintains faith, or imani, that she will do well in school and one day will achieve her goal of attending Spel-man, a historically black college in Atlanta. Jayson, 14, said last year that he would work on ujima, responsibility, by taking care of the younger children while his mother makes dinner, and by helping out with the housework. festivals, Kwanzaa which means "first fruits" in Swahili celebrates African heritage. "It reaffirms our rootedness in African culture and the bonds between us as a people," said Maulana Karenga, who created Kwanzaa in 1966 when he was a doctoral candidate and community organizer in Los Angeles. He's now chairman of the black studies department at California State University at Long Beach.
