"The taxi would take me right past Palmyra High School. I could see the kids. It was excruciating for me. From that moment on, I knew I had to prove that I was capable of returning to teaching and coaching.

"When I got out of college in 1981, Palmyra was my first job. I had never missed a day of work before the accident. "My teaching and coaching were all I really knew and were the most important things in my life. I always wanted to make a difference in kids' lives. I wasn't going to let anybody knock me out of the things I love the most." The recovery process was slow.

During the summer the mental and physical problems began to subside and heal, however. "I had sustained a head injury, and at first everything was a like a puzzle out of place for me. It took some time for that puzzle to fall back into place." Along the way, Morgan received an outpouring of letters and visits from former Palmyra athletes and friends. "But Ed told my wife and me when we visited him at McGee that he was a teacher and was going to return to teaching and that he was a coach who was going to return to coaching. "I think teaching and coaching were such a force and so important in Ed's life before the accident, that they played an important role in helping him get back.

"Ed is an integral part of our teaching and coaching programs at Palmyra, and he's done a heck of a job coming back." Despite the enormous amount of time Morgan has spent putting his own life back in order, he says there are others struggling with the same physical problems he's endured. "I feel I'm back and living a regular way of life again," said Morgan. "But there are over 100,000 people with head injuries each year and it takes time to recover. "They need not only the inner drive to recover, but the support of other people around them. "I'm lucky.

I received a lot of support from our town, our faculty and our administration. To just get through this has been a great thing for me." The Focus Is On Nikon SAVE $20! Won Skn VUUFbne-onty $7100! "My dad told me never to quit on myself. And that's something I've thought a lot about since the accident.

"Plus, I have the words determination and commitment on my wall at school and I've always tried to motivate my softball players with those ideals. This situation taught me a lot about me because I've had to use those same ideals to help myself." And proven it, Morgan has. Amazingly, in just nine months after the horrible incident, he received the go-ahead from the folks at McGee to resume teaching at the start of the school year in September. He returned to the classroom as a special education teacher, and to the football field as Bud Maurer's assistant. A few weeks ago, Morgan returned to his softball program, which was run last spring by assistant coach Bob Hartman.

"I am really amazed by Ed's comeback and the progress he's made," said Holcomb.
