1 i' Feeder Strom Key in Southwest Surge By DWAYNE NETLAND Minneapolis Tribune Staff Writer Walt Williams would be the last man in the City Conference to minimize the effectiveness of Jack Hagberg. The Southwest coach realizes where his basketball team would be without its 6-5 center. But in Williams' opinion the real key to Southwest's recent surge has been Sheldon Strom, a six-foot forward who has helped the Indians not only in scor ing but also in feeding Hagberg and on the boards. Thus Strom has an important role tonight as Southwest attempts to preserve its title chances against Roosevelt in the 9 p.m. feature of the city card at the Auditorium.

In the other games, Edison plays West in the 2:30 p.m. opener, Central opposes Washburn at 3:45, Henry and Vocational seek their first victory in the 5 o'clock special and North tangles with Marshall at 7:30. "I wanted to play Strom last year," Williams explained, "tout there was no room for him with Hagberg, Don Mattsson and John Wagner on our front line. He told me last spring he was going to practice his shooting over the summer. He must have done it.

because he's a better shot this season." The Marshall North game also matches two title hopefuls, both with 4-2 records. It also brings together two well-drilled and comparatively small teams, each playing a pattern offense. "But North suddenly gets a lot bigger," remarked the Marshall coach, when that 6-5 sophomore (Bob Kramer) gets in there. He could hurt us." Guard Louie Lindstrom of out of school all week with a throat infection, will be replaced by sophomore Mike King in the Polars starting five. MINNEAPOLIS M01NING TIIIUNEOI Friday, Feb.

Park's answer, again, is scoring balance with Bruce Ack-land, Gary Orbeck, Larry Fundingsland, Mark Zanna and Bob Hill providing the punch.

Hopkins hopes to get back on the track against Richfield after losing to Bloomington Tuesday night. Baylor Unavailable LOS ANGELES, Calif. UP) Elgin Baylor has been turned down by his superior officer at Ft. Lewis, and won't be available Monday night when the Los Angeles Lakers play St. Louis.

Danger signals go Out tonight for St. Louis Park, the leader in Lake Conference basketball. The 11-1 Orioles play at Robbinsdale (8-5) at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake feature. Other games tonight: Richfield (7-6) at Hopkins (9-3), Mound (2-10) at Edina (2-11) and Wayzata (3-9) at Min-netonka (3-9).

Bloomington (11-2) does not play. Chuck McDonald and his Robbinsdale bunch should pose plenty of problems for Park. The Robins apparently play their best when the going is tough. Park's lone loss was to Hopkins, a team that Robbinsdale has beaten twice. Tall (6-foot-5) Gary Love-mark in the pivot and the Wilt Breaks Scoring Mark Associated Press Wilt Chamberlain struck for 59 points Thursday night, erasing his own league season scoring record and leading Philadelphia to a 136-120 victory over New York in the National Basketball Association at Syracuse, N.

Y. Chamberlain's showing pushed his season scoring mark to 3,039 points, breaking the record he established last year with 3,033. Oscar Robertson scored 38 points to help Cincinnati snap a six-game losing streak as the Royals posted a 113-109 victory over Los Angeles at Dayton, Ohio. Syracuse held Eastern division leader Boston to 14 points in the third quarter, and went on to a 122-110 upset. onship home last' year and will not surprise itself if it takes two this year.

The thinking is that Drake hits hard enough to handle the light heavyweights and might have a better chance with the bigger, slower opponents. Wadena may have a dark-horse in little John Sundby, a sharply-conditioned, hardhitting flyweight.

Sundby has boxed some of the better fellows around the Upper Midwest and will not be awed by the tournament field. He is probably Wadena's strongest entry. Ut) NCAA president Henry Hardt said Thursday he believes a "last chance" conciliation meeting Sunday and Monday will provide the framework for harmony between the feuding NCAA and the AAU. "The NCAA is anxious to reach an agreement we hope to work out as much as we possibly can," he told the Associated Press.

HARDT SAID he was enthusiastically looking forward to thejsummit conference, in Chicago, adding: "There is no question about it we" must get together." Kenneth (Tug) Wilson, president of the U.S. Olympic Committee, called the meeting in a move to end the giant power struggle which jeopardizes America's international sports c-ture.
