tf COUHibR-HOiT, Sunday, November 24, 1991 innaminson stra state title 3rd By TOM McGURK Courier-Post Staff EWING The Cinnaminson High School girls' soccer team played its favorite kind of soccer Saturday evening at Trenton State College dominant. The Pirates closed their season the same way it has the past two years GfQUQ 2 by winning the sate Group 2 title with an impressive 1- H.S. Girls' Soccer thing tell into place, the sophomores matured and they got on a roll." West Morris Mendham put some early pressure on the Cinna-mison defense, generating four shots in the first 15 minutes. But the Pirates settled down and didn't allow another shot on net until the second half. When the defense began to dominate the game, Eleuteri made a little adjustment to produce some offense.

"We were passing the ball extremely well and making our runs but we still needed a little bit more offense," said Eleuteri. "So, early in the second half, I moved Jackie (Dirr) up front to get something going and it did." Dirr, a senior, got the game-winning goal with 32:57 left in the second half. After Carrie Lippincott 0 win over West Morris Mend-ham. Cinnaminson's three-week romp to its third consecutive state crown ended with 13 straight wins and saw its stingy defense allow only one goal over the stretch. "We certainly peaked at the right time," said Cinnaminson coach Gloria Eleuteri, who guided the Pirates to a 22-2-1 overall record.

"Coming into the season, we were very young and we had lost a couple of key people, but then every- -I i 1 1 0 0 i got pulled down just outside the box, Dirr took the direct kick and sent a 20-yard bullet over the outstretched hands of keeper Michelle Liebe. "I was just hoping to get it over her head," said Dirr, who registered her 17th goal of the season. "We came out a lot more aggressive in the second half, going for the ball every opportunity we got, and it paid off. In the beginning of the game, I think we were all a little nervous, and they came out really fired up but then we settled down and got back into our game." Cinnaminson's third trip to the Astroturf field also played a factor. "We all knew how to play on this field and I think it helped a lot," said Dirr.

"We knew how big the field was and we knew what we could do, passing-wise, on the turf." The closest West Morris Mend-ham got to the Cinnaminson net in the second half was two corner kicks. But those didn't even reach the net as Tricia Anderson and Jessie Dirr cleared them out of the zone before an opposing forward could get to the ball. Keeper Linnea Young, who was active in the game's early stages, only had to make one save in the second half. She finished with four saves to record her 16th shutout of the season and seventh straight. Cinnaminson, which has 11 sophomores on the team, graduates only five seniors Dirr, Lippincott, Sue Trautman, Elise Bruccoliere and Young, all of which were members of all three state title teams.

"This is the most special of the three," Dirr said. "No one ever expected us to come this far and win. I have to admit I was a little skeptical in the beginning of the season. But the sophomores became totally different players as the season went on, and I think it picked everybody else up. On the run: Cinnaminson's Jeannine Young (right) controls the ball against West Morris- By TOM McGURK Courier-Post Staff EWING The Holy Cross High School girls' soccer team fell short in its bid to become the first South Jersey team ever to win a Group 4 state title when they dropped a 1-0 deci- sion to Randolph Group 4 on Saturday after noon at Trenton State College in the championship game. The Lancers finished its best season in school history at 17-4-4 overall, which included its second consecutive Burlington County League Liberty Division title and its first South Jersey Group 4 title. Randolph finished its season at 20-1-1. Randolph, which outplayed Holy Cross in the first half but couldn't break through, took advantage of its only scoring opportunity of the second half when Kathy Wareing scored the game-winning goal with J4 minutes. 7 seconds left.

Karvn ordentown falls to Morris Cath. today and they played their hearts out. "I think, if we were able to tie the game up, that would of given us the momentum we needed but the goal that was taken away took a lot out of us." The Astroturf field appeared to take away the Holy Cross passing game in the first half but it wasn't just the playing surface that affected the Lancers. "We couldn't get the ball to the outside because the girls were staying along the football out-of-bounds lines instead of the soccer lines," said Sgroi. "We talked about it at halftime and it got better in the second half.

"We could only practice in the gym this week and I think it hurt us a little when we got up here. It took a little bit of time for the girls to get used to the surface." Holy Cross' defense also picked up the pace a notch in the second half and kept the Lancers within scoring distance. Tier anchored the fullbacks, which held the opposing forwards to three shots in the second half and were easily saved by keeper Dana Jones. By TOM McGURK Courier-Post Staff EWING The Bordentown High School girls' soccer team heard the rumors about how Morris Catholic had dominated Othe small schools the past three years GrOUD 1 and Saturday morning the Scotties found those rumors to be true. A powerful Morris Catholic squad played a near-perfect game en route to a 4-0 win over Borden NATIONAL DIVISION COLONIAL CONFERENCE the first half.

Greenberg's attempt to tie the score failed when her 22-yard direct kick sailed over the crossbar. The Scotties' leading scorer, Kristen Cloutier, who finished her sophomore season with 17 goals, was held in check by the tenacious Morris Catholic defense. Listed below are the players named after the league's annual tournament competition.

The Lancers tried everything to get the equalizer, but even when they did get a goal, it was waved off by the official with a penalty. The controversial call was made with 10 minutes left in regulation. Kristen Tier took a direct kick from 30 yard out, which bounced high off the turf and then off the crossbar.

The ball bounced back to a Bordentown coach Dominick Cas-taldo. "The girls played very well for 70 of the 80 minutes today, but it was those 10 minutes in the second half that was the down spot for us. "But I was very pleased with our performance today because we did some good things out there." Bordentown's down spot actually lasted for just 2 minutes, 35 seconds of the second half when if niL-i: .1 morns iuinuuc scurcu mrce gums to tum a 1-0 lead into a 4-0 rout. Emily Rogic scored the first of the three goals when she pulled keeper Missy Inman out of position and slipped a ball into the goal with 34:50 left in the second half. Jen McLaughlin scored 1:12 later off a 21-yard direct kick and Dina DaCosta capped the scoring with 32:15 left.

Aside from that surge, the Bordentown defense did a decent job of shutting down an explosive front line. Heather Hendrickson anchored the defense and Inman was impressive in net with 10 saves. Morris Catholic took a 1-0 lead with 28:59 left in the first half when Kate Vedder headed in a Dina DaCosta comer kick. That goal would be all Morris Catholic needed because Bordentown struggled offensively the entire game. The Scotties finished with just five shots on net.

"The forwards kept moving into the center of the field and many of the passes would just skip by them," said Castaldo. "I told them at halftime to play for the flags so that would cut some of that out." 6. The Intimidator makes no bones about the fact that his major goal is to equal or surpass Richard Petty's record of seven series championships, a mark once thought to be as untouchable as Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak or the 33-game winning string by the Los Angeles Lakers. No other driver has won more than three Winston Cup titles. Petty, who has announced he will retire following the 1992 season, last won the series title in 1979, the year Earnhardt won the rookie title and the year before the younger driver won his first championship. "He's a heck of a race car driver," Petty said of Earnhardt.

"He is a championship-quality driver. You want somebody to drive that leads races and wins races. You don't want somebody that wins the chsiupioriohip just because he finishes ahead of somebody else. Dale Auto Racing is definitely a winner." Asked if he is concerned about Earnhardt beating one of his gfea test records, Petty said, "Nopt Hey, he's still behind me. He's got two to go.

"But it's no big deal to me. Even if he wins 10, I've still got seven I'm not competing against him for that. If he gets more, that's fine More power to him." Petty was asked if it's harder to win championships now than it was when he first began winning them? He joked, "I really don't know, I haven't won one in so long." Low is high enough Dale Earnhardt won the 1991 Winston Cup championship with a total of 4,287 points, an average of 148 per race. That is his lowest average in his five championship seasons, although he beat second-place Ricky Rudd by 195 points. A year ago, Earnhardt won the title vvith 4,430 points and an average of 153 points.
