mens field hockey team. 4-1, here yesterday and left the Americans still hunting for their first victory in the history of Olympic competition. "With 20 minutes to plav the game was there for the coach GavinFeatherstonesaid. "And Malaysia took it." After playing well in losses to highly regarded India and West Germany, the Americans had hoped to end their 13-game Olympic losing streak against winless Malaysia. But a pair of goals by right wing Cheo SingTam put the Americans in an early hole and they never recovered Goalie Randy Lipscher of La wrence-ville kept it close with a series of saves and clears, but Sarjit Kyndan Singh scored with nine minutes to play and it was over.

Michael Chew accounted for the final score with a penalty stroke. If the Americans are to win here in the competition at East Los Angeles College, they probably have to do it tomorrow afternoon against Spain. "We've beaten teams before," Featherstone said. "We don't have the same motivation as you press guys. We're not interested in what happened in 1600.

We play Spain, that's all we worry about." The Americans lost the services of veteran midfielder Michael Kraus of Frankfurt. West Germany, just six minutes into the game. He suffered a separated shoulder. "Our players are emotionally very disappointed." Featherstone said. "They played their worst game today." Brian Spencer of Canoga Park, gave the Americans some hope when he scored on a follow-up to make it 2-1, but the winners retained control.

The Americans moved the ball well in midf ield but were unable to force a single penalty corner. "Our guys choked up a bit inside the 25," Featherstone said. He drilled a home run into the right-field bullpen. The U.S. was up 9-0 and there was only one out in the game. And so it went. Colabello, who played college baseball at the University of Massachusetts, finally left, but little changed.

Scott Bankhead pitched the first five innings for the US, giving up but one unearned run on three hits. Mike Dunne pitched two scoreless innings and Pat Pacillo and Don August pitched an inning each. McDowell, a senior at Arizona State, added a second homer in the eighth and ended the night with five RBI. Like McDowell, Mack and Green had three hits for the U.S. Every starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run.

Seven of the Italian starters played college ball in the U.S., not that it seemed to help much. They also wore uniforms identical to that of the Los Angeles Dodgersandusedthe Dodgers' dugout. I'nfortualely for them, they also hit like the Dodgers have been lately They managed seven hits, all singles. By STEVE DILBECK Gannett News Service LOSANGELES-Safebackhomein sunny Italy, Luigi Colabello pitches for the Papa Barzetti Club. There, no doubt, he is not in the habit of watching his pitches turn into so many rockets, his offerings becoming potential weaponsofdoomforhisfield-ers.

But last night at Dodger Stadium, the U.S. Olympic baseball team jumped on him for nine runs in the first inning and cruised in for a 16-1 victory over the Italians before a crowd of 48,491. Colabello gave up seven hits, three of which sailed over fences for home runs, and one 400-foot out before leaving. For the U.S., the victory improved its record to 2-0 in its division and assured the Americans of advancing into the medal round, regardless of the out-comeoftheirgamewiththe Dominican Republic tomorrow. This must have looked like a pretty good idea to Will Clark. The Mississippi State sophomore jumped all over a Colabello pitch, sending it near the top of the left-field pavilion and almost out of the park.

If the Italians were getting the idea this wasn't going to be Colabello's night, they were yet to show it. They stayed with him after he gave up a 400-footouttoMarkMcGwirethatwasonly a couple feet from being the Americans' third consecutive home run. Still, they went back at it. Then, in their fifth events, came what appeared to be a turning point Vidmar gettinga 9.9 in thevaultwhileLiwasreceivinga9.8on the parallel bars. BUT WHILE all this was going on, Gushiken was quietly putting together a sensational series 9.90 on the side horse, 9.95 on the rings, 10.00 on the barsand then a 9.95 on the high bar. That last one OF THE three medal-winners, only Li said he was aware of the point totals heading into the last event. "I had no idea where I stood before the parallel bars." Vidmar said. "The (U.S.) coaches may have known, but they didn't tell me.

Besides, if they had, it might have made me nervous and I'd have made a mistake, and then I wouldn't have been standing on the awards platform at all. "After I finished on the bars, I saw the standings after five events posted. Then I looked over and saw Koji taking off his tape, so I figured he was done. I asked him what his score was (in the floor exercise) and he said 9.9. 1 added them up and I realized he had won." aOLaa-L Freestyle-1.

Daniel Belli, Canada, al moved him from third place to first, vaulting over both Li and Vidmar. And it set up the climactic final rotation. Gushiken and Vidmar each was scheduled to lead off his rotation -Gushiken in the floor exercise, Vidmar on the parallel bars. Li was scheduled sixth and last on the high bar. Gushiken began his floor performance while Vidmar was still adjusting the parallel bars, and was almost finished when Vidmar began his routine.

By the time Vidmar had finished, Gushiken's score still had yet to be posted. So all both athletes could do was wait. GUSHIKEN'S SCORE appeared first: a 9.90. That meant that Vidmar needed a 9.95 to win; a 9.90 would lose it for him. A tie wasn't possible.

Then, perhaps 30 seconds after Gushiken's score went up, Vidmar's was posted: 9.90. He was out of it, and so was La, who had trailed Vidmar after the fifth rotation. The best Li could hope for was to tie Vidmar for second, and he needed a 10.00 on the high bar to do that. He got a 9.90. "I didn't deserve a 1 0 on the parallel bars," Vidmar said.
