COURIER-POST, Monday, February 29, 1988 5D i7 Howard Stern's TV party entertaining but crude By CHUCK DARROW Of the Courier-Post There was a rather entertaining pay-per-view television special on Saturday night. Unfortunately, it was mostly obscured by the bad taste, cruelty and borderline pornography that made up the bulk of "Howard Stern's Negligee and Underpants Party." Right from the top of the 2V2-hour live program Stern's first headlining TV gig the controversial radio host made it clear he was going to take full advantage of the freedom from censorship offered by pay-per-view cable technology. For starters, the show was introduced by a man with a rather severe stutter, a task made all the more difficult by Stern's scriptwriters, Jackie "The Jokeman" Mar- dize his marriage). And so it went, as Stern and his sadly underutilized sidekick Robin Quivers presided over an unfettered video version of his daily radio show, ultimately emerging with a combination TV talk show parody and comedy theater wrapped in a greasy blanket of male adolescent humor. Was it worth the $19.95 Stern fans had to shell out to watch this experiment in broadcasting? No, it wasn't (though some may argue that it was a cheap price to pay to see someone set his crotch on fire).

Ten dollars would have been much more reasonable. But despite all that, the "Negligee and Underpants Party" was, in a strange way, an exciting and entertaining endeavor. First of all, it was live TV at its rawest. The electrically-charged anything-can-happen atmosphere was almost exhilarating. We didn't know just how close to the edge Stern would go, and it was fun to watch him inch toward it.

Then there was Stern himself. The curly-maned radio star has an interesting and slightly dangerous presence that is quite appealing given the institutional blandness of most TV talk hosts. And there really was a lot of genuinely funny stuff. True, some, as the pre-recorded "Gay Untouchables," was extremely tasteless. But it was also hilarious, as were Martling's brief (and filthy) comedy monologue and a slew of ad-libs that Stern and company flung around the set like so many spitballs.

REVIEW tling and Fred Norris, who purposely wrote words that would give the unfortunate gentleman the most problems. This was followed by a segment in which people outside the studio were challenged to perform stunts (mostly involving the taking off of clothes) in order to gain admittance to the broadcast. That smarmy bit of business segued none-to-smoothly into 45 minutes' worth of "Lesbian Dial-A-Date." This featured two female porno stars in Frederick's of Hollywood underwear, who continually alternated between fondling each other and fondling Stern (despite his repeated protestations that the activity would jeopar 5AY EVENING TUESDAY AFTER riO OH 2 pm 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00 4:30 5:00 5:30 6:00 6:30 Another World Scrabble Super Wheel of Newlywed Hollywood News News NBC News Password Fortune Game Squares One Life to Live General Hospital Oprah Winfrey News News ABC News Newlywed Dating Cannon Barnaby Jones T.J.
