ELGIN ANDCRYSTAfLAKE New payTV leads world Oak Industries Inc. announced today its joint venture over-the-air subscription television service in Los Angeles, National Subscription Television, has passed the 100,000 subscriber mark and is now the largest single pay-TV operation in the world. The television service was launched in Los Angeles in April, 1977, and became profitable in August of 1978. Oak has invested more than Sll million in the venture.

NST programming features unedited, uninterrupted motion pictures, live sports events and variety entertainment without commercials. Using addressable equipment developed by Oak, NST transmits its signals over the air in contrast to cable TV which utilizes wires. "NST in Los Angeles continues to prove that a significant segment of the television viewing public is willing to pay a regular fee for an alternative to commerical network programming," said E.A. Carter, chairman of Oak Industries. "This is why we are accelerating our plans for expanding subscription television to other cities." Oak last month announced it would begin subscription television service in Phoenix in July.

1979. John P. Gwin, president of Oak Communications an Oak subsidiary, said NST, in addition to being the largest pay-TV operation, ts currently one of the fastest growing. "In Los Angeles, approximately 2,500 new subscribers are signing up for the NST service each week." he said. Oak owns 51 percent of the Los Angeles operation and Chartwell Communications 49 percent.

"The results confirm the viability of Oak's technology in the operation of over-the-air subscription television," Gwin noted. "Oak developed and manufactures the encoders which send the broadcast signal, the decoders which make the signal clear on the subscribers' TV screen for audio and video reception, and the computer software which operates the system. Oak announced in October it would develop subscription television markets independently of OartweU.
