On Wednesday, defending women's champion Serena Williams had a 6-3, 6-1 victory over 1 30th-ranked Camille Pin to reach the third round. Williams gave up only three points in the last three games in running her winning streak in Melbourne to 16 matches. FOOTBALL PASCAGOULA'S HOPSON PICKS USM: Pascagoula linebacker Domonlc Hopson orally committed to Southern Miss on Wednesday. Hopson (6 feet 2, 230 pounds) was a second-team All-State pick by The Clarion-Ledger and Region 4-5A Defensive Player of the Year.

He chose USM over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. "Southern Miss was the best fit for me," Hopson told the Sun Herald newspaper. "It's close to home so my mom can see me play. Their depth chart worked in my favor. They only had one guy (Marcus Raines) in front of me, so I have a great shot of playing right away." Hopson is on track to meet NCAA freshman eligibility requirements.

DUKE BOWS OUT AT HATTIESBURG: Hattiesburg coach Buddy Duke is leaving the school after two seasons. Hattiesburg athletic director Cheyenne Trussell said Wednesday that Duke will not return as the Tigers' coach for the 2006 season. "He did address the football players (Tuesday) and told them that he would not be back," Trussell said. "As of right now, he is still the head coach, but all indications are that he will be the next coach at Sumrall." Sumrall is seeking a new coach to replace Ken Carter, who resigned after the 2005 season. Duke was 15-8 in his two seasons at Hattiesburg after posting a 62-28 record in eight years at Laurel.

GOLF PEREZ FIRES 60 IN HOPE CLASSIC: Pat Perez shot a 1 2-under 60 in the opening round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic on Wednesday in Palm Desert, joining some elite company. Perez became only the 20th player in PGA Tour history to shoot 60 or lower. The record is 59, shared by David Duval, Chip Beck and AJ Qeiberger. Consistently nestling his fairway shots close to the pin, Perez made 1 2 birdies and no bogeys over the Arnold Palmer Course at PGA West for a three-shot lead over Chad Campbell. HORSE RACING BAILEY TO RETIRE THIS MONTH: Jockey Jerry Bailey was thinking retirement for several years and finally, a few weeks into this season, he knew it was time for his illustrious Hall of Fame career to come to an end.

"I still enjoy competing in the biggest races on the best horses on the biggest days," the two-time Kentucky Derby winning rider said. "But to get to those days, there are a lot of routine days and I just didn't feel the passion I should have felt." With that, Bailey, 48, said Wednesday he'll retire after riding at Gulfstream Park in Florida on Jan. 28.
