But physical therapists say backpack users would be better off focusing on safety. A backpack that doesn't fit properly or is too heavy can lead to injury. "One problem with backpacks is they often lead kids to arch their backs or lean forward or sideways," said physical therapist Joe Jacobson, director of Methodist Outpatient Rehabilitation in Flowood. "These harmful postures can cause spinal compression, improper alignment and disc problems." Jacobson recommends backpacks that have padded and contoured shoulder straps and a waist belt. "The straps help reduce pressure on the chest and shoulders and the waist belt helps distribute some of the load to the pelvis," he said.

Clinton teen Alex Parker said her backpack can get heavy, but going to schools that have class sets of books helps keep the weight down during the school day. "That really makes a difference," she said. "That keeps my backpack lighter." But there are times when, walking between classes, her backpack is just plain heavy, said the 14-yearold ninth-grader at Sumner Hill Junior High in Clinton. Sometimes, she can convince a guy friend to carry it. When that doesn't work, "I shift it, and keep shifting it until it doesn't hurt as much," Parker said.

"I just tough it out, and when I'm outside, I take it off my back." Once you find a backpack with the right features, Jacobson recommends taking time to get a Tips for safe backpack use include: Wear both straps. Using only one strap, even backpacks that have one strap that runs across the body, causes one shoulder to bear the bag's weight. Wearing both straps distributes the weight evenly. Make sure the backpack fits. Shoulder straps should rest comfortably on the shoulders and under the arms, so the arms can move freely.

The pack should "sit" evenly in the middle of the back, not "sag down" toward the buttocks. Use caution with wheeled backpacks. Physical therapists recommend that the extended handle is long enough so that you are not forced to twist and bend, and that the wheels are large enough so the backpack doesn't topple. Source: Backpack Safety PACK IT proper fit. According to Backpack Safety a backpack should cover 75 percent of the length of your back, roughly the space between your shoulder blades and waist.

Jacobson said children should not carry backpack loads heavier than 15 percent of their body weight. Signs that your backpack load should be lightened include red marks on the shoulders, back pain and numbness in the arms. Madison County schools getting 3 auditoriums By Lucy Weber our talent." MADISON The overture is beginning for three of Madison County school district's newest productions. Work will get under way this fall for three auditoriums that will allow each of the county's high schools to host performances of bands, choirs and plays. Because of the technical aspects of coordinating the lighting and sound systems, construction will take about 16 months to get each building "performance worthy," Deputy Superintendent Ronnie McGehee said.

Teachers who will see their students benefit are glad to see the auditoriums coming. "There's nothing like having a place dedicated to a performance," said Jay McArthur, Ridgeland High band director. Madison Central choral director Joanna Hunt said the auditorium will raise the level of artistic performances the schools present. "We've been making do with a cafetorium (a stage at one end of the cafeteria)," she said. "To think that we're starting is just wonderful," Hunt said.

352-3632 The three auditoriums have basically the same interiors on all three high school campuses, with the only difference being in the number of seats, McGehee said. All three have the same lobby, technical systems, orchestra pit and stage dimensions of 3,000 square feet and 55 feet across the front. The exteriors will match the schools. The buildings are designed by the Jackson architectural firm of Cooke, Douglass, Farr and Lemons. "The Ridgeland High School auditorium will be a tremendous asset to showcase the talent of students who are a part of the choral program," choir director Lisa Fournet said.

"The auditorium will give the students an opportunity to perform in a facility that is designed to display their hard work and dedication." Madison Central, the largest school, will have 1,000 seats and be 24,000 square feet overall. Its construction budget is $6.3 million. Ridgeland High will have 800 seats in a space and a building cost of $3.5 million. Velma Jackson will have 400 seats in 18,000 square feet at a cost of $1.4 million. The money for the auditoriums comes from the $40 million school bond issue approved by voters last September.
