STANDINGS All Times COT CONFERENCE USA East Division Conference PF PA UCF 2 0 61 30 UAB 1 1 72 54 mm Winning the CBL title, which the Cats did with decisive Game 5 victories after falling behind in both of their playoff series, made Terwilliger's decision easier. "If we hadn't won the whole thing, I think I would have come back. I know I would have," said Terwilliger, the Cats' manager the past three seasons. "It was a lot easier than I thought maybe." Fort Worth was the 1 6th team Twig coached and his 12th minor-league managerial job record over 18 seasons). He has been out of baseball only one year since signing with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1948.

Twig got two World Series rings as first base coach for the Minnesota Twins (1986-94), and he was on Ted Williams' staffs with the Washington Senators (1969-71) and Texas Rangers (1972). He is the only person to wear the uniforms of the Senators and the two teams they spawned the Rangers and Twins. In 1951, Terwilliger was Robinson's backup for the Brooklyn Dodgers and on the opposing bench for Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning home run, the "Shot Heard 'Round The World." Twig stepped aside as the Cats manager for one game in August, allowing 87-year-old Bobby Bra-gan to lead the team. That allowed Bragan to become the third octogenarian manager and surpass Mack as the oldest ever in a pro baseball game. BASEBALL TRACY TO LEAD PIRATES: Jim Tracy is moving from one of baseball's biggest markets to one of its smallest, from a team that spends big and thinks big to one with more modest expectations following 13 consecutive losing seasons.

To Tracy, who signed a three-year contract Tuesday to become the Pittsburgh Pirates' manager after five mostly successful seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it's not the size of the city or the payroll that matters most but the talent. And he sees the same kind of young talent in Pittsburgh that he saw in Los Angeles in 200 1 "Challenges are something that I like very, very much," Tracy said. "I like hearing people say or maybe think that this is a situation you don't have a chance to succeed in, I'm very challenged by that." Tracy was 427-383 and won the 2004 NL West title with the Dodgers despite a failed roster overhaul orchestrated by general manager Paul DePodesta that led to a 7 1-9 1 record this season. He was 75. Argea died Monday night at the home of his nephew, according to close friend Bill Taylor. "He had friends everywhere," Nicklaus said Tuesday. "In many ways, Angelo was part of our family, and Barbara and I will miss him greatly." Argea caddied for Nicklaus from 1 963-82. They won about 40 tournaments together, including the U.S.

Open, British Open and PGA Championship. OLYMPICS BLOOM TO TRY NFL: Jeremy Bloom, the skier and former Colorado football player, is attempting another eye-popping double. Just seven days after competing in freestyle moguls at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, on Feb. 1 5, Bloom is planning to attend the NFL combine in hopes of landing a job as a punt returner and receiver. Bloom, 23, took on the NCAA over the rights of student-athletes to keep sponsorship money outside their college sport and lost.

After two years at Colorado, he left college football behind to ski full time. Last season, he became the first man to win six straight World Cup mogul events in one season. HOCKEY MISSING CROSBY JERSEY FOUND: a jersey worn by No. 1 draft pick Sidney Crosby in his first NHL game was found Tuesday at Pittsburgh International Airport, two days after it vanished from luggage checked onto a flight by his father, a US Airways spokesman said. The jersey, worn by Crosby in the Penguins' season opener in New Jersey last week, disappeared from one of two bags checked onto a flight to Buffalo, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon by the 18-year-old player's father, Troy.

The luggage was partially unzipped and the shirt missing when the elder Crosby picked it up at baggage claim. MISCELLANEOUS GAY RIGHTS GROUP CHARGES BIAS: a gay rights advocacy group has accused Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland of forcing a player to transfer earlier this year out of bias against lesbians. The National Center for Lesbian Rights asked president Graham Spanier on Tuesday for a meeting to discuss Portland's policies and the transfer of former player Jennifer Harris. Portland said she was unaware of the request and declined to comment on either Harris' transfer or the accusations of anti-gay bias. IRISH EYES NOT SMILING: Maybe the thieves just like the Fighting Irish.

There was a burglary at a Wheeling, W.Va., law office, and the haul was 1 7,288 worth of Notre Dame football tickets including eight for a game against top-ranked Southern California. Also stolen were tickets for games against Brigham Young, Tennessee and Syracuse, police said. From staff and wire reports 2 UL-MONROE 5 FLA.
