1. 1. 20 THE PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS MARCH 24, 1992 DEATHS James King 67, a Mummer's Mummer James King a Hall of Fame Mummer who established a 57-year legacy in the String Band Division that all five of his sons continue to carry on, died Sunday. He was 67 and lived in Gloucester City, N.J. "My father marched with five different clubs in his day, and he did it all as musician, president, captain, drill master and musical said a son, Joseph.

At one time or another, King was a member of the Ferko, Hegeman, Garden State, South Philadelphia and Woodlawn clubs. In 1982, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Jim King Sr. was a king with his own court comprised of his five current pretenders to his Mummers throne. Son Joe, a banjo player, is captain of the Trilby String Band.

Tommy, who plays five instruments, is presentation director for the Woodland String Band. Ronnie, who plays drums and banjo, is Trilby's drill master. Jimmy, a sax player, marches with the South Philadelphia String Band. Bobby, a bass player, was captain of the old Garden State King by Frank Dougherty Daily News Staff Writer King club who now keeps his hands in Mummery by crafting head pieces for marching musicians. The senior King taught all his boys how to play music, along with scores of other musicians who now each January march in the annual parade.

"Cock an ear on New Year's Day, and you'll hear a kid trained by Jim King. His style has a trademark all its own," said longtime friend Jim Donaghy, a Hall of Fame Mummer who served as captain of the South Philadelphia String Band for 29 years. Bill Kurzenberger, president, board of directors, Mummers Museum, knew King for 30 years. "Outstanding hornman, one of the greatest saxophone players to ever march up The Street," said Kurzenberger. He remembers best the style King brought along with him when playing a free-lance musical job.

"He played with as much heart at a corner taproom on Rising Sun Avenue as he did at Convention Hall." Born in Camden County, King was a man proud of his Irish roots, a devout Catholic and family man who never missed Sunday Mass. He and his wife, the former Rita DeAngelo, were to celebrate their 40th anniversary later this year. King was 10 years old when he first marched up Broad Street with the Trilby String Band. His last march was in January 1990, playing the sax with the Woodland Club for their presentation of a theme entitled L'Chaim. In addition to his five boys, King also is survived by five daughters.

(O'LEARY FUNERAL HOME, Springfield, Pa.) string bands, he always made sure he had time for the girls," said a daughter, Rita Greenan. Her dad's idea of a good time was to take over the kitchen, where he would fry bananas, make pineapple cakes and roast turkeys for his large family.

After dinner, King would pop corn, then settle down for a night of Hollywood classics. His favorite movies were "Imitation of Life" and "The Glenn Miller Story." "He would settle in the living room and get us to scratch his back. After the movies, we would play hide and seek," said Rita. In an earlier day, King earned his living as a pipefitter at the old Sun Shipbuilding Co. After leaving the trades on disability, King took a job with Philadelphia Costume a Mummers supply house in Center City.

King was a decorated hero of World War II. He was just a teenager when he joined the Navy, and was cited for his life-saving efforts in rescuing shipmates that went into the drink during an enemy raid, family members said. His trademark was the ubiquitous mug of Taster's Choice coffee that was always in his hand, along with a Marlboro 100. "He had his own language, too, said son Joe. He called men and women "Yo, boy" and always answered a question with a question, asking anyone within earshot, 'Do you get my Joe King said if his pop didn't make the Mummers Hall of Fame, he would have entered the Medical Hall of Fame on the first ballot.

"In the past quarter-century, my dad had 19 operations, two strokes, lung problems, cancer, heart bypass surgery, and had four vertebrae removed." Joe said. Fellow string-band captains all agree Jim King was the most courageous man they ever marched with. Bill Speziale, captain, Ferko String Band, said, "He was a total, committed Mummer. He was in and out of hospitals, yet he never missed a parade. His love of the music and the pageantry overshadowed the pain." On Sunday afternoon, a special tribute was played for King after Mummers performing at the Show of Shows in Convention Hall learned of his death.

Woodland and Trilby saluted his memory with the tune, "Unforgettable." Joe King stood on the arena floor with the musicians. He said he never considered canceling his performance. "If my father thought I wouldn't let the show go on, he would kick my behind," said Joe. "He was a Mummer, both in this life and in his death." In addition to his five sons, his wife, and daughter, Rita, King is survived by four other daughters, Marie Kwitkowski, Helenann Cattell, Elena, and Charlene Radcliff; 20 grandchildren; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
