U1U THE CLARION-LEDGER I JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI MONDAY, MAY 24, 1993; I Beverly Hillbillies back in land of cement pond TV Astronaut transports to Enterprise The first African-American woman in space is on Star Trek. The cast returns for a retrospective of the cornpone classic. Nickelodeon, Fox plan to produce kids' movies Jat iw From Wire Service Reports By Mike Hughes Gannett News Service By Marcia Dunn Th Associated Press A I ''4, jK8 Twentieth Century Fox and cable's Nickelodeon have entered into a two-year deal to develop and produce theatrical motion pictures. "American movie theaters today don't have enough to offer kids and their parents," said Geraldine Laybourne, Nick president. "Our mission is to create family movie-going experiences where kids will feel comfortable bringing their parents." The cancellation of Lifetime's Jane Pratt Show wasn't funny to those who worked on the show, but it became hot fodder on Comedy Central.

The talk show for the 18-to 25-year-old set featuring Sassy magazine editor Pratt, got the hook because of sagging ratings. A few days later, Pratt appeared on Comedy Central's Short Attention Span Theater in a long-scheduled appearance. With no show to tout, she zapped the Lifetime brass: "Lifetime, you are all losers." Lifetime took the jab in good humor. "I have spoken to Jane's agent and he said she was quoted out of context," quipped Lifetime President Doug McCormick. Before Pratt's Comedy Central outburst, executive producer Jim Ackerman defended the canceled series.

"We produced a cutting-edge show that addressed issues like AIDS, sex, bigot- ry and politics subjects that young people are talking about," he said. Designing Women closes shop tonight at 8 on WJTV-Channel 12 after seven seasons. Feisty Julia (Dixie Carter) fights to prevent a takeover of her design firm, Sugarbaker's. Watch for the spoof of Gone with the Wind. Buddy Ebsen spent decades alongside icons, from Shirley Temple to Walt Disney.

He spent one wretched day as the Wizard of Oz' Tinman, gasping for air. "It was very scary, because I couldn't breathe," he says, due to an allergy to the silver dust in the makeup. He helped make Disney's first animatronic character. "One day, I got a call from Walt," Ebsen recalls. "In the course of the conversation, he told me about this little song-and-dance man.

He wanted it activated with my body movements." So Ebsen danced, Disney watched and history was made. Still, that wasn't his call to fame. Ebsen, 85, is marking another entertainment icon tonight at 7 on WJTV-Channel 12, as host of The Legend of the Beverly Hillbillies. In 1962, writer-producer Paul Henning pitched a notion about hillbillies moving to Beverly Hills. "He told me the story and, of course, it broke me up," Ebsen says.

"We jumped to the gate ahead of everyone else. We did personal pitches for every station." By modern standards, the results were extraordinary. "The second week, we were No. 1." CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The only black woman to fly in space, Dr.

Mae Jemison, is boldly going where no real-life space traveler has ever gone before she's going on Star Trek. Jemison makes her acting debut tonight at 9 on WDBD-Channel 40 on Star Trek: The Next Generation her favorite show. She plays a transporter operator, Lt. Palmer. Last September, Jemison made her first and only real space flight, aboard the shuttle Endeavour.

Now, she had an opportunity to portray a space traveler albeit one in the far-distant future, on a craft that bears little resemblance to the shuttle. Was this a weird experience? "It's sort of as though there is a place where fantasy and reality meet. It's sort of a nice mind game to play with yourself," she said. "As a child, Star Trek was one of the ways that many people lived their imagination of traveling to the stars and going into space. And some of us held on Jemison was invited to appear by LeVar Burton, who plays Lt.

Cmdr. Geordi La Forge; Burton directed Buddy Ebsen: He recalls his years as Jed Clampett. Ebsen talks warmly about his co-stars, including Donna Douglas, the late Irene Ryan and Max Baer. "Max had a lot of energy. He had a tendency to get into every department, which is why he's done so well (as a movie producer).

He's a fun-loving guy." Still, the tough part was stretching one gimmick over 274 scripts in nine seasons. "I think it's a tribute to Paul Henning's talent, that we were able to keep it up." In the middle of this nonsense was Ebsen's dead-serious Jed Clampett. "Somebody had to supply some dignity, to hold it together. He had comportment, which I enjoyed playing." The Associated Press Mae Jemison, seen here on a mission on the shuttle Endeavour, guest stars on Star Trek: The Next Generation tonight. Jemison isn't sure she'll watch the show, entitled Second Chances.

"I'm not sure if I really want to see it, actually," she said. "Maybe I'll just not watch the part I'm in and watch the rest of it, because it's going to be a very good episode." the episode. Flying in space had been Jemis-on's lifelong dream; she was inspired in part by the original Star Trek character Lt. Uhura, played by a black actress, Nichelle Nichols. The two are now friends.
