The Panthers drop to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference as they dropped their 23rd straight game. "We needed this game," linebacker Vingi Johnson said.

"Coach told us we had to play hard no matter who we were playing against. We had to stay focused and not worry about the game next week. We had our heart set on a victory." JSU rolled up 558 yards in offense, with 326 coming in the first half. Jordan completed 4-of-6 passes for 127 yards in only a half of playing time. Antonius Kimbrough caught three passes for 103 yards in- JSU's defense, which was lead by Perry's 13 tackles and a safety, will need a stellar performance next week at Alcom against the conference's top offense.

"We give (Alcorn quarterback) Steve McNair a lot of respect," Perry said. "We are going to have to go out there and play hard and go all out." Prairie View, which came into the game with the leagues' worst offense, was unable to capitalize on two of JSLPs fumbles in the first half. Prairie View wasn't able to score after getting the ball to the Tiger's 3-yard line. "We needed to shut them out for a confidence boost," Perry said. "We didn't want to give up the big plays.

The last two weeks our defense had some breakdowns." If Jackson State had Alcorn State on its mind, the Tigers didn't seem to let it show. The Tigers rolled to a 46-0 win over Prairie View before a small crowd of only 3,000 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.

"We came into the game not looking ahead," linebacker Mario Perry said. "We were concerned Monday about how the guys would play," JSU coach James Carson said. "It was like pulling teeth." By the third quarter Carson had pulled his starters with a comfortable 31-0 lead to give them a rest for next week's big showdown at Alcorn. "We needed a big win," quarterback Ricky Jordan said. "Going into the Alcorn game we knew we had to get some momentum." In only two quarters of work, tailback James Johnson had 193 yards on 18 carries and had scored three touchdowns.

On the season, Johnson has rushed for 1,115 yards. Johnson had touchdown runs of 12, 78 and 23 yards to help JSU snap its two-game losing streak. Johnson's best game ever in a Tigers uniform came hours after he attended the funeral of his cousin. "I wasn't really into the game at first," Johnson said. "It was a pretty emotional game for me.

I feel good about my effort. After I had a good run, I told everybody I was back into the game." Johnson's previous best game was 185 yards against Stephen F. Austin two years ago. But what pleased Johnson the most was seeing his younger brother, Joe, get his first career touchdown at JSU. The younger Johnson scored on a 4-yard run with 46 seconds remaining to close out the Tigers scoring in the fourth quarter.

"It was real exciting seeing him score," James Johnson said. SWAC standings Team Alcorn State Grambling Jackson State Texas So. Alabama State Miss. Valley Southern U. Prairie View Conf.

The Tigers held Prairie View to only 119 yards total offense and six first downs. "We performed well," Carson said. "Anytime you put a win in the column whether it is against somebody you're suppose to beat or not, it is good. It is good to get back in the winning column." The defense, which gave up big plays in the Tigers' losses to Grambling State and Texas Southern, returned to its old form. "The last two weeks we were not playing up to par," said Johnson, who had nine tackles.
