Secrecy has cloaked Byron De La Beckwith's visits to a Jackson hospital, his wife says. Thelma Beckwith said her 71- year-old husband spent two days at Methodist Medical Center in midAugust after he complained of dizziness.

She said Beckwith told her in a letter she received Monday that he had been hospitalized again with elevated blood pressure. She said she didn't know of the hospitalization until she received his letter. She said he was checked into the talized. Beckwith From 1B "Even though our lives have gone on, the experience has been a living nightmare," she said. "It's reliving everything.

I have never been able to put it aside. It has been with me every day of my life and many of my nights." "The last year or so has been extremely difficult," she said. "We seem so close to the solution of this case, yet so far." Beckwith's son said, "It's just a crying shame and I feel it's ridiculous they have dragged things out for this long. It's an unnecessary burden and hardship on members of his family. "We feel the pressure from everybody asking questions that we can't answer or don't want to answer.

We are not politicians or preachers. We are just hard-working people that want to be treated fairly and left alone," he said. Methodist Medical Center spokeswoman Janice Baddley told The Clarion-Ledger on Aug. 18 and Sept. 22 that no one by the name of Beckwith had been treated at the hospital.

Four other Jackson hospitals contacted on both occasions by The Clarion-Ledger said Beckwith had not been treated there. "He's in the custody of the Hinds County Sheriff's Department," is all Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin will say when asked whether Beckwith has been hospi- joyed helping children in the church. "She worked with the Scouts on their cooking and camping merit badges whatever they needed," he said. Janice Middleton said Mrs. Cooper even took some of her four sons fishing to help them complete work on a Boy Scout merit badge.

She keeps in touch via letters and telephone. Although she lambasted Hinds County authorities for keeping Beckwith jailed without bond, she said he's received better treatment at the Hinds County Detention Center than at the Hamilton County Jail. But she said she fears he needs surgery for heart problems. He has previously had surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Thelma Beckwith said her husband also has high blood pressure and has recovered from a previous bout with cancer.
