14D COURIER-POST, Sunday. December 2, 1984 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS Paulsboro romps 40-8, dethrones Glassboro 3 VP -r rT)JfI: m' wj By JOHN VOGEDING Of the Courier-Post 4 nt 1Mb-. tjjr 4dutfro -jew- i TV. 2A. Ti-rr-; -w Stopped Sacked PAULSBORO The script was undeniable.

Glassboro High School senior Sean Redman, the leading scorer in the state and everybody's consensus All-South Jersey running back, was matched against a pesky, bend-but-not-break Paulsboro defense without a superstar. What a stand- mbh ing-room-only GROUP 1 crowd of better than 4,000 saw here in the Group 1 championship yesterday was Redman getting another touchdown and 138 yards rushing. But the accolades for Glassboro stop right there. Instead, it was a super two-way effort from the guys in the trenches, a swarming effort by a determined secondary and an explosive offensive performance featuring John Worthy, Robert Muse and Emmett Merchant that shone brighter than the sun overhead as Paulsboro, No. 13 in the Top Ten Poll, dethroned the defending champions with a no-doubt 40-8 victory.

"They came off the ball and took the line of scrimmage away from us," said Glassboro coach John Aveni, whose team beat Paulsboro 34-8 in thesemifi-nalson the way to winning the title last year. 'When you control the line of scrimmage, you control the game." And control the line is exactly what Paulsboro did. Paulsboro scored six times using, basically, five running plays and one pass completion. But those plays worked to near-perfection as the line of sophomore center Steve Cockrell, senior guards Jim Pandolfo and Paul Schultz, senior tackle Freddie Wilson and junior tackle Mike Bowen, junior tight end Gary Funk and senior tight end Scott Campbell too small to be called 'hogs' reacted with the tenacity of 'killer bees' to establish the tempo early and keep it virtually the entire game. So devastating was Paulsboro's effort in the trenches that Worthy gained 1 96 yards on 2 1 carries, scoring on runs of 13 and 57 yards; Muse added 1 08 yards on 1 5 carries, scoring once on a 46-yard dash before being taken to the hospital with a knee injury early in the fourth period; and Merchant, a freshman speedster localites are already comparing to former All-South Jersey star Flipper Anderson, scoring two ridiculously easy-looking touchdowns on a 38-yard pass from Frank Purnell anda 10-yard runoff the veer as the Red Raiders piled up 408 yards in total offense.

Junior quarterback Mike Brady ran the veer to near-perfection in the first half, adding the other touchdown on a one-yard sneak, throwing a two-point conversion pass to Campbell and using the option fake perfectly to feed Worthy for another two-point conversion. But Brady was forced to leave the game with a painful hip-pointer after keeping the ball to absolutely the last second before pitching it to Muse on the 46-yard option left touchdown with Paulsboro High School's Robert Muse is tackled by Glassboro's Frank Mancini after a seven-yard gain early in the third quarter of yesterday's game. Redman's season touchdown total left him one shy of the record set by Willie Drewery of Northern Burlington in 1980 and third in points behind the 210 by Charles Fryar of Burlington City last ear and 208 by Drewery in 1 980 Mark Gipe was in on 1 2 tackles and Ron Barratt in on 10 to lead Glassboro the Bulldogs got their lone turnover hen Ben Crcdell recovered a umbled snap on Paulsboro's second series of the third quarter. gained a bigchunk of ground on the second drive, capped ady's sneak behind the blocks of Schultz and sophomore center Steve Cockrell. On the third touchdown, Muse went 46 yards on an option left from Frank Purnell. The key block downf ield came from Jim Pandolfo, the off-side guard.

The last two scores, a 57-yard run on a veer left by Worthy came behind the double team of Scott Campbell and Freddie Wilson and a lO-yarc1 veer right by Merchant off the double team of Gary Funk and Mike Bowen, were brilliant executions. Bowen.ajuniorwhodid yeoman-like work both ways at tackle, said he expected a closer game. Another Frank completion to Bateman came up four yards short on fourth down as Funk, Gentile and tiny Wade Hulmes combined for the stop.

The last two possessions were turnovers. Bateman was stripped of the ball by Gentile, with Hulmes recovering, after a 15-yard gain, and Jlanding intercepted Frank at midfield. "Obviously, we knew we had to key on Redman some, but not entirely," said Gentile. "Maybe Frank was overshadowed, but we knew he was a helluva passer. It was a great team effort, especially by the guys in the line." Taraschi agreed.

"I was tempted to send the linebackers (on a blitz) a few times, but didn't have to. We stunted on the interior some, but not that often. Basically, the guys did what they had to do in the interior. When you get that, you don't have to play many games." Courier-Post photo by Sam Kushner outcome when Albie Quarles returned the opening kickoff by Mike Wiggles-worth 43 yards to Glassboro's 4 1 "That was a great motivator for us," said Brown. "That gave us some options to use plays we might not have used if we were back in a 'high risk' area in our territory." The first series ended in eight plays, with Worthy going 17 yards on an option right.

Brady's pass to Campbell made it 8-0 before some people entered the stadium. On Glassboro's second series, Quarles intercepted Frank on Paulsboro's seven and Paulsboro proceeded to march 82 yards in nine plays, capped by Brady's sneak and Worthy's conversion. The next Paulsboro possession was a 60-yard drive in three plays, with Muse going the final 46 on an option left. Redman's one-yard dive averted the shutout with 15 seconds left in the first half ona 75-yard drive featuringtwoof seven pass completions from Frank to Dave Bateman. Frank passed to Tim Lester for the conversion points but Glassboro's point production of eight points would never expand.

The second half was a blend of aggressive defense featuring fumble recoveries by Quarles and Wade Hulmes and an interception by Aaron Blanding and the scoring of Merchant and Worthy's scintillating 57-yard run. "I'm not surprised by Paulsboro's win," said Aveni, whose team is No. 9 in the poll. "I knew they were a team capableof doing that. But I didn't think we'd lose the neutral zone like we did.

Once they took it, they never gave it back. And what everyone saw was an old-fashioned butt-kicking." Frank Purnell completed his scholastic football career with a storybook ending, engineering Paulsboro's offense to three second-half scores, including a textbook execution on a fly pattern with Merchant. "When Brady went down in midsea-son (in a 22-0 win over Haddon Heights), I was nervous when I went in," said Purnell, who shunned any thoughts of quitting after losing the glamorous quarterback position to Brady in preseason. "But this was such a big game, I was mentally prepared.

And Mike helped make the job a lot easier by his encouragement and the way he played before I went in. "And noone can say enough about the jobourlinedid. On the touchdown pass, no one laid a hand on me. Emmett has such great speed. It was a fly, he beat the defense and I just laid it up." What Purnell couldn't say was how he showed such great poise in a game that, with Redman as part of the arsenal, was still up for grabs when Paulsboro sophomore Pete Brandt teed the ball up for the second-half kickoff.

"Frankie is a guy who gives 100 percent, a guy who is always ready to step in and contribute," said Paulsboro coach Tom Brown. "We had no fear using him." Worthy, like Purnell, had nothing but praise for the offensive line. "It was more the line blocking than my running that deserves praise," said the 5-1 1, 1 55-pound speedster. "It was by far their best effort of the year, especially against a Glassboro team and what they had been giving up coming into this game." Defensively, we respected Sean Redman. But we felt no one man was going to beat us. We talked about gang-tackling all week. We wanted to be swarming. As it turned out, I thought we were swarming both ways." "I was honestly surprised we moved the ball so well on the ground," said Brown, who has compiled a 57-15-1 record at Paulsboro since 1979.

"But we saw where Burlington Township had success against Glassboro offensively (in the Group 1 semifinal). And Delsea had success against them on the ground. I felt we could do the same thing. "It was a great finish," he said as cheers of winning another group championship echoed from Pauls-borons victorious lockkerroom outside the door of the coaches' office.

Taraschi has been coaching football at Paulsboro 13 years. He has been the architect of the defensive unit for head coach Tom Brown, a defense that helped win three other Group 1 titles. But this one was something special. It came against Glassboro and Sean Redman the leading scorer in the state. "We knew Sean was going to get yards.

But we wanted him to earn those yards. We wanted him runningeast and west as much as possible," said Taraschi. "We tried to mix it up in the first half, use the defense I thought would be most beneficial. "Basically, we went with a 5-4 I Spark the tackles shading the inside shoulder, the ends playing head-up. We felt to be successful, we'd have to keep Sean from running up field.

"On what we thought were obvious pass situations, we went with a nickle we stood the nose guard up in a linebacker spot, using a four-man front and dropped linebacker Gary Funk off as one of five defensive backs." said Taraschi. "We felt we'd still have inside strength because we moved (senior tackle) Jim Pandolfo, a converted linebacker, into the nose spot standing up. "What we got was a great job. Our ends (junior Leonard Purnell and sophomore Deron Dobzanski) did an excellent job reading screens." Taraschi also shuffled players in and out. Basically, sophomore Lamont Briscoe was sandwiched by junior Mike Bowen and Pandolfo.

At times senior Paul Schultz. who along with Pandolfo did a great job at offensive guard, was sent in at tackle, shifting Pandolfo to nose. And Barry Beckett went at tackle as others got a rest. Taraschi said the defense wasn't designed to key one player. He felt different looks was the best way to attack Glass boro's offense.

"We knew Sean would run, but they had other weapons. Lee Frank can throw the ball and (Tim) Lester and (Dave) Bateman have great hands. We did pick up some tendencies when Redman shifted, but our linebackers did a great job, too." Jeff Gentile, pound-f or -pound one of the toughest linebackers in South Jersey, was all over the field. The 5-1 0, iou-puuituer was in on 1 tackles and forced one fumble. Funk was in on nine tackles.

More impressive was a stingy secondary. Frank completed 13 of 23 passes for 126 yards. But the second Glassboro series end--d with Albie Quarles intercepting in front of Lester in man-to-man coverage. The third series ended when Frank completed a seven-yard pass to Bateman, only to have Quarles stop him two yards short of a first down. Glassboro only score, helped by a face mask penalty in a late first-half drive that consumed 75 yards in nine plays, was a one-yard dive by Redman.

He's in constant communication with the sidelines, but feels he can do a better job on the phones upstairs. Tom Brown was in his familiar position yesterday. And the Paulsboro High School head football coach liked what he saw below him on the field.

"I can't put into words how happy I am." said Brown after his team won its fourth Group 1 title in six years with a shocking 40-8 victory over defending champion Glassboro. "If there's a way to describe these players, it's that they are over-achievers. I'm happy forall of them but especially the seniors. They won two games as freshmen the only losing season under the present coaching staff since 1979. "They worked so hard to be so good.

Everyone saw a lot of pride in action out there. They don't know the meaning of the word quit." Senior Paul Schultz, a starter at center last year, suffered a fractured thumb in the last preseason scrimmage. He was back two games later at guard. Yesterday Schultz shared the spotlight with other members of the offensive line to pave the way for 370 yards on 48 carries by John Worthy, Robert Muse, Emmett Merchant, Mike Bradv and Frank and Leonard Purnell. Paulsboro used a minimum of plays to rack up its 40 points.

What they did, they did well. "The veer was especially effective," said Schultz, a 190-pounder on a line that averages 179 pounds. "Our ends were doubling down with the tackles. The quarterback made the read on the end. If theendcamedown, he pulled the ball if not, he gave it to the fullback.

The guards have to go out after the linebackers. "We ran the 34 and 35 a lot and that's hard on an end to read what's happening. It worked so often." Brown admitted that he called only what was working effectively. The option from Brady to Worthy, sprung by Muse, accounted for the first touchdown.
