iyraja(0ij Sunday, July 22, 1990 The Clarion-Ledger 7D Gasser looks ready to put pedal to metal vMfa isft complete game 4 By Jo Powell Clarlon-ladgar Staff Writar i gle. They scored their first run in the sixth on Chris Donnels' single. The Angels scored on home runs by Kevin Davis in the third and Reed Peters in the ninth. Angels starter Kyle Abbott, 3-8, took the loss. The Mets, who own a 5la-game lead in the Eastern Division second-half race, had nine hits.

Baez doubled and Alex Jimenez singled to extend their hitting streaks to seven games. Freiling is nine for 15 in his last three games. Schourek is bidding to become the first minor league pitcher to win 20 regular-season games since Fort Lauderdale's Gene Nelson in 1980. If his regular-season and playoff wins equal 20, he would be first minor leaguer to do that since Fresno's Charlie Corbell in 1985. 189 innings in the Midwest League.

Gasser is scheduled to start today at Charleston, W. and then in Sumter Friday night. "He should go four or five innings Sunday and as long as he can Friday," Herbison said. "I'll be going to Sumter for that one." Jackson resident Ned Yost is the Sumter manager. "He has several other players he wants me to help," Herbison said.

"I believe he'll be a great manager because he knows how to motivate the inner man, and he has that childlike love of the game." Kevin Coffman, Herbison's other top client, is 2-3 with a 2.48 ERA at Iowa in the Class AAA American Association. He pitched seven scoreless innings Friday night in a 2-0 win over Richmond. Blasingame figured in Rose's career: Last week's Pete Rose sentencing brings to mind how a Mis-sissippian was affected by Rose some 27 years ago. Corinth native Don Blasingame, with a .281 batting average in 1962, looked set as the Cincinnati Reds' second baseman in 1963. But manager Fred Hutchinson took a shine to Rose, a 22-year-old rookie, and Sports performance consultant Walter Herbison chalked up another success Tuesday night when pitcher Steve Gasser worked three scoreless innings for Sumter, S.C., in a South Atlantic League game at Greensboro, N.C.

Gasser hooked up with Herbison, a Clinton resident who uses psychology but is not a licensed psychologist, after being released by the New York Mets' organization. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up one hit and walked three. Greensboro eventually won the game 2-1. "Everybody was elated. Steve had great movement on his fastball and on his walks he just missed the strike zone," Herbison said.

"What made it even better was (Atlanta Braves director of player development) Bobby Dews being in the stands. "I made a believer out of him, and we talked about me going full-time sometime in the future." Gasser pitched for Columbia, S.C., in the same league earlier this year and walked 11 batters in one inning. He once struck out 225 in Tha Clarion-Lad gar MIDLAND, Texas Left-hander Pete Schourek, rebounding from his only Texas League loss earlier in the week, pitched Jackson to a 4-2 victory over Midland Saturday night. The Mets, who begin a 10-game homestand Monday against El Paso, finished their road trip 5-5. They beat the Angels four of five, including the last three games of the series.

Schourek gave up seven hits, struck out seven and walked none in pitching his first complete game with Jackson. He is 9-1 with the Mets and 14-2 with three teams. The 21-year-old Virginian lost a 13-game winning streak Monday night when he gave up nine runs in 2 innings against El Paso. Chuck Carr's two-run triple snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Howie Freiling started the rally with a single.

Angels third baseman Luis Aguayo erred on Steve Davis' sacrifice bunt, and Kevin Baez moved both runners up with another sacrifice before Carr delivered. The Mets made it 4-1 in the eighth on Freiling's run-scoring sin- --W ft I i Walter Herbison installed him at the position. Blasingame's popularity with his teammates and Rose's brashness caused a backlash against the latter. It dissipated only after months of all-out play. Blasingame was traded to the lowly Washington Senators during the '63 season.

He later played in Japan and became the first American manager over there. He now works for the Philadelphia Phillies as minor league field coordinator. Gross making progress: Kip Gross, who was 6-5 with a 2.49 ERA with Jackson last year, is 9-5 with a 3.81 ERA for Nashville, in the American Association. He was traded from New York to Cincinnati in the John Franco-Randy Myers deal. -J I Jim Trest George Rees Ronnie Black MitTCD TCrUMiriAU trmiire liAu.e-H MASTER TECHNICIAN METRO MAZDA-VOLKSWAGEN is proud to recognize our two most recent Fully A.S.E.

He gave up eight hits and five earned runs in 8 1 3 innings for a no-decision, keeping alive a six-game winning streak. The Mets came back to win 8-6 in 1 1 innings New York Mets executive vice president, general manager and chief operating officer Frank Cashen and senior vice president Al Harazin will be in Jackson Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the first three days of the Mets' 10-game homestand. Arkansas: Right-hander Dave Osteen (5-5, 3.01 ERA) was called up to Triple-A Louisville, where he started the season.

He had a streak of 26 straight scoreless innings in mid-June. El Paso: The Diablos broke their paid attendance record July 12 as 8,606 fans came out for "Fireworks Sky Show Night." Sports lllustratedis planning a story on public address announcer Paul Strel-zin. Midland: Manager Eddie Rodriguez gave ex-big leaguer Luis Aguayo much of the credit for the Angels' recent surge winning six )of eight games after the All-Star break. Not only has he batted .32 1 seven homers and 25 RBIs in only 32 games, but the former Phil- -adelphia Phillie utilityman has been a steadying influence on what had been a struggling team. "Luis has taken the leadership role upon himself," Rodriguez said of the third baseman.

San Antonio: Angered about being overlooked as Most Valuable Player in the Texas League All-Star Game, Eric Karros took out his frustrations on the Tulsa Drillers. In a five-game series he led the Missions to four victories by rapping eight hits in 19 at-bats. The outburst was a statement by Karros, who went 3-for-5, hit a homer and knocked in three runs in the All-Star game in Tulsa on July 1 1 Despite the outburst, the first baseman failed to win MVP honors, which went to his West Division teammate Ricky Bones in a vqte by the media. The game's starting pitcher, he hurled three perfect innings and struck out one. "I was furious that I wasn't MVP," Karros said.

"I kinda' made up my mind to have a decent series against Tulsa." He is I hitting .338. Shreveport: The Captains, who have lost four players to Triple-A Phoenix this season, are beginning to get a few paybacks. When catcher Mike Ham and pitcher Steve Reed were put on the disabled list, they were replaced by Jim McNamara and Eric Gunderson, both, coming down from the Giants. McNamara made an immediate impact by going 5-for-8 with six runs batted in his first two games. Gunderson opened the year with San Francisco.

Tulsa: Catcher Bill Haselman hit five home runs in four games against San Antonio and Wichita, bringing his season total to 12.
