NEWS Monday, December 28, 2015 Section A Daily Chronicle IRS will accept returns beginning Jan. 19 DeKALB The Internal Revenue Service has announced that tax season will officially launch January 19, 2016. The IRS will start to accept individual's electronic filings on this date, and is expecting to receive more than 150 million returns in 2016, the federal agency reports. The agency anticipates four of five tax returns will be prepared using computer software and programs, and will be e-filed (electronically). The IRS has put in place enhanced protections against identity theft during the filing season, agency leaders say.

Also, new federal legislation has made permanent IRS provisions and extended others. Filers are encouraged to have their W-2's, Form 1099's and other income documents from their employers before starting to file their tax return. The IRS urges filers to opt to have their refund issued through direct deposit to a bank account. For information, visit www. IRS.gov Daily Chronicle CHARLES LEE CLEGG Born: May 8, 1939 Died: Dec.

KNEPPER Born: March 16, 1923 Died: Dec. 22, 2015 center offers the free meal the fourth Sunday of the month. That time was chosen because it's usually when individuals and families begin to run low on monthly resources, including food, Boone said. The event grew out of a 10-week lunch program the church offers in the summer. But church officials determined that the hunger need was greater.

"We really were sitting around going, 'Well, what's happening to all these folks the rest of the year? What can we be doing to said Boone. "So, we decided to do a once a month meal." Kathi West said she and her husband started Wednesday preparing the chili. She said they cleaned and deboned more than 120 pounds of chicken, cut up fresh vegetables and prepared the stock used in the church member-provided recipe. West said volunteering for the REAL meal event has changed her and her family's life. "There's so many people that are hungry," said West, a credentialed cook at Northern Illinois University.

"We're in DeKalb, in the middle of this agricultural bounty. We all need to do more to help get that bounty out to those in need." The Cagles come just about every month for the event. Earnest, 76, and Judy, 71, say the meal is always good and the time spent with fellow DeKalb residents and the church family is even more of a treat. "This means everything to us," Judy Cagle said. "We love it." Boone said money to buy food for the meal giveaway mostly comes from donations within the church.

But other community partnerships including those with other area faith-sponsored food pantries help too, she said. And among the regular volunteers is DeKalb Boy Scouts Troop 4. Several Scouts were present Sunday, serving meals, pouring beverages, and, in the end, cleaning up and washing dishes because, Boone said, glassware is used, no paper products. It's part of teaching the boys about giving back and caring about others, one of the troop's leaders said. "Service is very important," said assistant Scoutmaster Doug Eaton.

"Our Troop really enjoys helping out the community and this is a great way to do that." By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespieshawmedia.com DeKALB Dozens of people sat around tables in the basement of a local church Sunday, taking in a "REAL" meal and enjoying community fellowship. Volunteers served homemade Arizona chicken chili and cornbread to the nearly 50 community members who showed up for the First United Methodist Church of DeKalb's monthly event. Organizers call the free dinnertime meal a "Relevant, Engaging, Authentic, Loving" (REAL) one where people not only are fed but also have an opportunity to socialize and participate in a worship service. "We're all about the fellowship and relationship-building. We want this to be a place that is safe and welcoming, and where people can know that they can be part of a family," said Vicki Boone, a REAL meal volunteer and First United Methodist Church of DeKalb's advocate for serving and outreach.

She said the church first began the REAL meal program in January 2014. The faith Ernestine Delores Dee Knepper, 92, of Columbia, Virginia, formerly of Genoa, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, at 11 AM.
