CO people THE NEWS Amy accepted at Princeton Amy Carter is among about 2,100 high school seniors who have been offered admission to Princeton University this fall, said a spokeswoman for the family of former President Carter. Amy, 1 7, was also accepted at Brown University in Providence, R.I., said Madeline Edwards, the Carter family spokeswoman in Plains, Ga. Amy toured the Princeton campus in October with her father and a group of Secret Service agents. More than 12,200 high school students applied for admission. Those selected have until May 1 to reply.

"It is open competition," said George Eager, a university spokesman. "If Amy Carter has been admitted, I congratulate her." Amy, who has said she wants to study physics, attended public school when her family moved back to Georgia in 1 980. She transferred to the Woodward Academy in Atlanta as a junior. Ma Meucci? An Italian-American historian says the world has it all wrong: Antonio Meucci invented the telephone, not Alexander Graham Bell. John LaCorte told 50 fellow Italian-Americans in New York celebrating the 177th anniversary of Meucci's birth yesterday that the Florence, Italy, native deserves the credit.

Meucci, a philosopher and electrical tinkerer who came to Staten Island in 1850, spent 20 years perfecting plans for the telephone. In 1 87 1 he took out a temporary patent for the telephone with the U.S. Patent Office because he couldn't afford $250 for a permanent patent, LaCorte said. Butaferryaccidentoff Staten Island in 1873 left him incapacitated and penniless. By 1874, Meucci and his wife were unable to pay 10 to renew the temporary patent, LaCorte said.

"If he'd had the $250 then, the world would call it Meucci Telephone today, not Bell Telephone," LaCorte, 75, told the crowd of flag-waving Italian-Americans at Meucci Square in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. Meucci Square is across from the Bell Telephone Co. building. Ferraro wouldn't do it again Geraldine Ferraro says she does not think she would ever run for vice president again "Next time I'd run for president," she said with a laugh. Ferraro, who is writing a book about her experience as the first woman candidate chosen by a major political party, told the Ladies' Home Journal in New York if she had known what the 1984 campaign would be like, she would not have done it.

"I think if God had said to me six months ago, 'Gerry, here is the picture of what's going to happen to you and John (Zaccaro, her husband) over the next six I would have said, 'No, I don't want to do Let some other woman be the first." One of the toughest issues she dealt with was abortion, the Queens Democrat said. "It is the worst issue to have to deal with and harder for women in politics than for men," she said. Though she personally does not approve of abortion, Ferraro believes in freedom of choice. As for the church's recent, vocal anti-abortion stance, Ferraro said, "If the Catholic hierarchy had behaved in 1960 the way some prelates behaved in 1984 (John) Kennedy would never have been elected." Ferraro's interview appears in the magazine's May issue. She was one of six women named as "leading ladies" of the decade.

The others included actress Meryl Streep, Princess Diana, First Lady Nancy Reagan, astronaut Anna Fisher and Olympic gold-medalist Mary Lou Retton. it ADD SPARKLE SPICE PLUS HIGH IlEADEKSHIP TO YOLK SALES MESSAGES WITH A COURIER-POST CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENT CALL 663-7100 MR. and MR. Lost dog tags found A retired serviceman who thought he lost his dog tags in Germany during World War II "just can't figure" how one of them turned up 43 years later in a pile of Virginia topsoil. Otis Long, 68, said a Richmond, man found the identification tags recently and wrote to him. "Hope this letter reaches you. I found your Army dog tag in a load of dirt delivered to my home recently," wrote David Lutton. "I'll send you the dog tag if you get this letter." Long, a former infantryman from Atwood, who fought in Europe tely.

and Lutton sent him the tags with another letter. "It was with great pleasure to know I was able to contact you," Lutton wrote the second time. Longsaid he remembers missing the tags "sometime during the war," but thought they were lost in Germany. I just can't figure it out," he said. Lutton, an Air Force veteran, apparently tracked down the address of Long's mother.

Ivey Long, where Long still lives. Early in the war, dog tags also carried the name of the serviceman's mother. Long retired in 1 96 1 after 20 years in the service and spent the next 20 years working at the Milan Army Ammunition Plant. "Now that I've retired the second time, my wife and I hope to make that trip to see Mr. Lutton." he said.
