8A COURIER-POST, Friday. April 5, 1985 TELEVISION Unpretentious Brokaw number two, but trying harder By FRED ROTHENBERG Associated Press read introductions to stories 30 minutes a night. NBC staffers say the format makes Brokaw appear rigid and formal. HE AGREES there's an "artifice" to reading copy. And he jokes about the perception of TV newsreaders as all teeth and hairspray.

His colleagues believe the bona fide Brokaw emerges in his on-air ad-libs and conversations during interviews and election all-nighters. "I think he shines off the cuff," says Steve Friedman, executive producer of the "Today" show. "NBC is better off when the Brokaw the man and not Brokaw the anchorman shows up." "My impression is that he's a small-town boy who makes a lot of money but is still down to earth," says Edward Deitch, a writer for the "Nightly News." "In the newsroom, sometimes his shirttail even sticks out." CO-WORKERS SAY the real Brokaw shows up around the office and in those prime-time promos and full-page newspaper ads that trumpeted Brokaw last month. Internally, NBCdubbed March "Tom Brokaw Month" because, in conjunction with the mam "Honorary Member of the Guild," then lists nearly every job classification imaginable. BROKAW IS not one to sit still outside the office, either.

He spends vacations back-packing, mountain-climbing and skiing. He's just written a story for Outdoors Magazineabout his trip last summer through the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. New York City also absorbs him. He jogs 3 V4 miles in Central Park each morning and enjoys family outings to theaters and museums. Last month, he was the reporter for a "Nightly News" piece on fear and crime in city subways.

With a big grin, he signed off the broadcast from inside the subway, hanging from a strap. Brokaw sits down to write his copy after lunch, working in the newsroom, not his private office. He appears just as he did in the ads: directed, even-tempered, approachable. The only difference is that he wears glasses, which he never does on camera. HE'S INCREDIBLYcalm under pressure," Gould says.

"He's rock solid and steady and, as a producer, that's all you want." Brokaw also works hard at his managing editor duties. He organizes "brown-bag lunches" for the staff, inviting speakers like Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca, Rep. Newt Gingrich, and NBC Chairman Grant Tinker. On Friday nights, he arranges beer-and-pretzel parties. "It's not any kind of group therapy.

I believe strongly in collegial efforts. I see it as a chance to praise and mingle," Brokaw says. "I like to have a beer and salute the labors of the past week." Tom Brokaw loves to tell stories. On the air. Off the air.

Around a campfire. In the newsroom. And, perhaps most of all, about himself. "I used to wear sweaters all the time on the "Today" show. But when Dan got all that attention for wearing sweaters, I knew it would be impossible for me to wear one on 'Nightly Tonight marks the third anniversary of Bro-kaw's tenure as anchor of NBC's dinnertime newscast.

The "NBC Nightly News," basking in the glow of better ratings, has been a consistent No. 2 behind Dan Rather's "CBS Evening News" this year. In the TV news wars, Rather has a hard-nose image and his pullover. Peter Jennings has years of experience abroad and his accent. Brokaw has a solemn boyishness and his roots.

BROKAW WENT to high school in Yankton, S.D., and gets starry-eyed about Norman Rockwell Americana and the call of the wild. His colleagues say he has a Yankton yarn for every occasion. "He often opens up the morning news conference with a story," says "Nightly News" producer Cheryl Gould. "We'll tease him, but that doesn't stop him." "Almost everybody at the meeting is from New York or from some big city," says Brokaw, who started working at KMTV in Omaha, in 1962. "I'm just offering a perspective about small-town life and farms." It's hard to know a man from watching him NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw losens his tie and lets his shirt tail out as he works on copy for 'Nightly moth promotional push, the "NBC Nightly News" was rechristened the "NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw." The promotions showed Brokaw, in shirtsleeves, tie yanked down, leaning back from his desk andchattingas reporter-anchorman-managing editor for "Nightly News," booster for journalism and devoted family man and Midwestern American Dreamer.

To readers, the ads may have seemed pretentious, but Brokaw says promoting personalities I've been lucky. And I am very grateful." Asked if the copy didn't sound schmaltzy or patronizing, Brokaw says, "That's how I feel. And my family didn't think it was patronizing, either. The motivation was to get behind theguy, give a better sense of who I am." To some colleagues, he is "Duncan the Won-derhorse," a tag invented by Friedman to note Brokaw's boundless energy. He throws himself into everything he does.

A sign in his office, a birthday present from his staff, touts him as was just part of television journalism. "You're never totally comfortable with it, but it comes with the turf," he reasons. THE NEWSPAPER ads conclude with these words from Brokaw: "You know what I wish could happen to every man in America? An experience like mine living with four women like Meredith (his wife) and our three teen-age daughters Don't talk to me about what women can't do. They can do anything. Yeah, FRIDAY EVENING FRIDAY AFTERNOON Gil Gerard plays reacer Bobby Atkins, Lisa Blount (left) plays his girlfriend, and Emily Moultrie plays his daughter in 'Stormin' a movie that explores their relationships amid the world of motorcycle racing, Ch.
