That attitude was very definitely expressed when a group, of execu-tivea -representing stores whlch transact business on bailment lease met in the Wllkes-Barre Deposit and Savings Bank building auditorium and discussed preparedness plans for combatting any effort of the State launching to colleot tho 1 per cent sales tax on bailment lease business. The meeting was called by Wyoming Valley Mer chants Association. The Valley or ganizatlon jumped into the leader ship of the organized opposition to re-enactment of the sales tax last year, a movement which became state-wide and led to the formation of the Pennsylvania Retailer Association. Under the sales tax law, adopted practically overnight by the legislature in the 1932 session as an emergency relief measure, imposed a tax of 1 per cent on all retail sales for a period of six months. The tax period began September 1 of that year and continued until February 28, 1933.

Vigorous opposition to re-enactment, led by valley merchants, pre- vented the continuance of the sales tax law or the adoption of a similar measure. What steps will be taken by interested mercantile establishments should the State attempt to collect on bailment lease business, payment of which had been withheld by bailment lease houses on the contention that these transactions did not represent retail salea as construed toy the law, were not disclosed after yesterday afternoon's meeting. That the affected mercantile establishments are preparing to go bat legally with the State on the matter was indicated however by tiie fact that Attorney Frank P. Slattery, counsel retained by the group last year, conferred with the merchants at yesterday's meeting.
