WEDNESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 3, 1958 A I I I PAGE 3 NO RIVAL FOR ELVIS Cliburn Confesses: Likes Rock Roll KILGORE, Tex. product is rather different," pianist Van Cliburn said grinning after somebody suggested he is a rival of rock 'n' roll singer Elvis Presley. Cliburn, now 24, said he isn't very good at rock 'n' roll but has "invested many nickels in juke boxes to listen to it." This confession came after he received a long and loud ovation from an audience of children for h'S performance of the long Rachmaninov Third Piano Concerto. Cliburn said he inaugurated his concerts for children because he thought of himself as a boy. "I wanted to play for my own contemporaries and convince them that my interpretation of classical music is good, too," he said.

Cliburn played two concerts, was acclaimed by speaker after speaker and honored by all and sundry at "Van Cliburn day in Texas." The lanky pianist was toasted in his home town here the first time formally since he won the Tschaikovsky piano competition in Moscow last April and became perhaps the most famous young musician of two continents. Texas Gov. Price Daniel, the main speaker, said: "In this day and time when the eyes of the world are usually on material achievements, it is heartening to know that mankind can still be impressed by the cultural accomplishment of a young man who has devoted his life to making other people happy through great music." Carport Fire Believed Set By Small Boy A fire believed to have been started by boy playing with matches destroyed a twin carport at 2844 Coconino Vista yes- erday afternoon. Approximately $1,500 damage was caused by the blaze, which was confined to the carport and storage shed. Mrs.

Emily Brodie said a neigh- xr told her a small boy, possibly about 11 years old, had been seen the carport shortly before the ire started. Union Shakedown Or Real Charity? WASHINGTON--UPI--Senate rackets investigators are trying to find out whether a fund for "old sheet metal workers" in Chicago was a bona fide charity or a union shakedown racket. A couple of contractors who made donations voiced suspicion yesterday that the only "old sheet metal workers" who tion six to eight more contractors benefitted were the union officials and four or five more union offi- who solicited the contributions, cials today regarding payments They regarded the transactions as "payoffs." The rackets committee left it up to the Justice Department to resolve a in testimony between Arthur H. Cronin, a vice president of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, and business witnesses. Cronin denied sworn charges he received $27,000 in payoffs from a big Kansas firm and smaller sums from heating and air conditioning firms in the Chicago area.

Chairman John L. McClellan (D-Ark) said it was a case of deliberate perjury on someone's part. He told Cronin to return next Monday with any records that might support his statements. committee planned to ques- and "rigged bidding" on shee metal work. Cronin also deniec yesterday he ever told any con tractors not to bid on certain jobs or how much to bid on others.

The chief conflict came on the testimony of Carl L. Burrows 01 Wichita, that he and other officials of the Coleman Co. paid Cronin $27,000 over a two-year period to ease their difficulties with the union. Cronin swore it wasn't so. He conceded they handed him $5,000 in a dimly-lighted cocktail lounge in Chicago's LaSalle Hotel in December, 1954.

The Cochise County Board of Supervisors is expected to confirm results of the election and create the new city in the near future.
