COURIER-POST, Friday, December 6, 1991 Obituaries 8b Richard Speck, mass murderer Rev. Gerald Ferguson, pastor of Millville parish; i JOLIET, 111. (AP) Mass murderer Richard Speck, who shocked the nation in 1966 by stabbing and strangling eight student nurses, died Thursday. Friends and relatives of his victims expressed relief and bitterness. "I think that it's a shame that it's taken this long for him to leave this Earth," said Betty Jo Purvis, sister of victim Patricia Ann Matusek.

"Judgment Day has finally arrived for that sucker," said retired police officer Jack Wallenda, one of the first on the murder scene. "And he died an easy death he should have suffered a lot more than he did." Purvis said she was happy that she will no longer have to attend periodic parole hearings for Speck. Speck was pronounced dead, one day shy of his 50th birthday, at Silver Cross Hospital, near the Sta-teville Correctional Center where he had been held for nearly 24 years, Corrections Department spokesman Nic Howell said. He apparently suffered a heart attack, said Will County Coroner Duane Krieger. He was ailing from an enlarged heart, severe emphysema and clogged arteries, Krieger said.

Speck first was sentenced to death, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the death penalty and he was resentenced to eight consecutive terms of 50 to 150 years each. He had seven automatic parole board hearings, at three-year intervals, in which the testimony of the victims' families helped keep him in prison. In prison, Speck worked on a wall-painting crew and sometimes did oil paintings of his own. His last reported tangle with prison authorities was in 1978, when he allegedly got drunk on home brew.

Police were still investigating Thursday the collision between Rev. Ferguson's black 1986 Pon-tiac and the 1967 gold Chrysler driven by Raymond Titus, 85, of Oldmans Township. Titus was treated and released from The Memorial Hospital of Salem County, Patrolman Robert DiGre-gorio said Thursday. Born Nov. 2, 1939, in Deny, Ireland, Rev.

Ferguson completed his education and seminary training at St. Columb's College, Deny, and St. Patrick's College, Carlo. He was ordained June 8, 1963, at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow. Three months later he became associate pastor at Our Lady of Grace parish, Somerdale.
