Si Saturday, April 22, 1939 THE CATHOLIC ADVANCE Page Three THERE WERE NO EASTER SERVICES IN THESE CHURCHES been imposed upon number of men charged with the unlawful, possession of explosives. "It may assist those who feel as all Irishmen and all Catholics should feel a sense of huumiliation at the tale of outrages perpetrated in the name of their race and "creed," Mr. Sullivan says, "to call attention to the means by which decent boys and girls are trapped by the criminal organization of the I. R. A.

(Irish Republican Army). When the psychology of this horrible thing is comprehended there will appear the means of saving in the future impending victims, and hastening the day when we may, without utrage upon justice, petition for clemency for misguided convicts. W. C. News Service) St. George, Grenada. April 14.

Residents of -this British Colony in the Windward Islands will long remember the Very Rev. Henry Sebastian Gates, noted Dominican priest, former naval officer, musician and artist, who passed away after a fruitful life which may be said to have comprised three separate careers. He was 87 years old. In every way his was an exceptional life. In his early years he attained wide repute as an artist and was likewise a well-known musician.

For more than 30 years of his priestly life he- labored in various parts of England, also putting his musical and artistic talents to the service of religion. At the age of 65, when most men would consider their work about done, he. answered the call of his country and became a naval chaplain. At the age of 70 he was obliged reluctantly to retire. Still unwilling to cease his labors, he asked to be sent to Grenada, although this meant beginning life all over again in strange sur- 5eo.

Parish Schools (By N. C. W. C. News Service) New York, April 14.

The Rev. William R. Kelly, superintendent of schools in the Archdiocese of New York, has announced that he is negotiating for the installation of a telephonic public address system between the school board and all classrooms of the archdiocese that may prove to be one of the most progressive and significant modern advances in classroom teaching. Father Kelly told 800 nuns at the spring conference' of Religious Teachers of the New York Archdiocese that he was discussing terms for a per manent wire hookup of all parochial hign schools and elementary schools that would make it possible for speeches, special lessons, urgent announcements and musical programs to be sent out simultaneously and instantly to all schools. The system, never before used in schools, represents a major advance over radioed school programs because programs could he sent out whenever desired, and without advance plans, Father Kelly said.

It also is considerably less costly than radio, he said. The system would make use of rag ular telephone wires, which would be leased full time from the telephone companies. Father Kelly said the plan under consideration was to permit some commercial sponsor to use the sys tem and to pay its entire operating cost in return. Experts in every field could give guestle ctures to the students of different subjects, Father Kelly said. Other possible uses of the system would be the" wiring of march music into the hallways of the schools during the changing or dismissal of classes.

Expert linguists could give demonstrations to the students of French and other foreign languages, the accents of which might not be mastered completely by some instructors. Famed Spain Statue Is Recovered in Paris (By N. C. W. C.

Quinones de Leon took over the build ing and began its renovation to re' ceive the new ambassador, Senor de Lequerica. It was during the renovation that the statue was discovered.

A robe, donated at the beginning of this century by a pious family, was the only one recovered. It is not known who brought the statue to Paris or who stripped it of its treasures. In any event the discovery was hailed throughout Catholic Spain for the image is the symbol of Spanish independence. Its origin dates from the eighth century when Don Pelayo, founder of the Spanish monarchy, conquered the Moors at the battle of Covadonga and was proclaimed king by his troops.

Bombings in England Draw Denunciation of Noted Irish Attorney (By George Barnard) London, April 10. "The honor of our race and creed demands that we do all in our power to smash this foul conspiracy," declares A. M. Sullivan, noted Irish attorney, who is one of the leading members of the English bar, in a letter to The Times, commenting on the series of bomb ings in this country.

There have been bomb explosions at arms factories, and underground railway stations culminating in an attempt to blow- up Hammersmith bridge here. Heavy sentences have Credo in Newmanum i voluntary poverty. In the sermon preached at the Requiem Mass, the Rev. Godfrey Anstruther, O. said of Father Gates: "He died as he had lived.

His death, as we should' expect, was marked by those two great virtues that I mentioned before: he died bravely; he died in poverty. I was privileged to read one of his last letters, in which he made arrangements for his burial. It was written in his firm, steady hand, without a trace of agitation or emotion. It was brief and businesslike; it was humble and deeply moving. It showed at once his courage and his love of poverty.

"It is. by his own dying wish that he has today almost a pauper's funeral. It was his last dying wish that he should be buried in a laborer's coffin, carried, by his own faithful children, and buried amidst the peo-1 pie to whom he ministered and whom he loved so dearly."
