Although neither the Federal or State laws apply to foods canned in the home and consumed there, it wculd seem that the housewife would not knowingly use, in the foods she preflervea for her family, substances that are prohibited by law in food for sale because the substances are injurious to health. The Department of Agriculture has issued bulletins that give specific di'ectiqns for the canning, and preserving of fruits and vegetables without the use of preserving powders or compounds.
