"We just have neighborhoods, families, groups all get together and ride around having a good time," said JoAnn Gordon, director of Canton Tourism. On July 5, the Canton Main St. Association is sponsoring a celebration to "commemorate our service people coming home," said Margaret Scholar, Canton Main St. director. There will be a patriotic salute and ceremony at noon on the square, and activities including a sidewalk sale, talent show and other entertainment are planned.

On July 6, the city of Madison will have a liberty antique festival and classic car show in the historic downtown district. The car show will be at Madison-Ridge-land High School. Antique dealers from across the Southeast will be at the show.

A tethered balloon ride will be available along with other children's act ivities. Madison County will be none short of July 4 celebration this year. In conjunction with the 6th annual Mississippi Championship Balloon Fest July 4-6, individual communities are planning events attractive to a wide range of interests. The Flora Area Development Council has organized its 2nd annual Flora Fest to be held on the grounds of the Flora United Methodist Church, the site of the Calico Fair. Activities will include arts and crafts, hot-air balloon tetherings, a children's petting zoo, local entertainment, a live remote broadcast from Mix 96 Radio and a concert by the Scott Hales Band.

The Ridgeland Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and Northpark Mall, is sponsoring Celebrate America, a balloon glow and patriotic tribute on July 5. The events, originally scheduled for consecutive nights July 4-5, have been combined "to best serve the interests of all the people involved," said Scott Jones, director of the Ridgeland Parks and Recreation Committee. "Instead of trying to get folks out two nights in a row, we thought it best that people could spend July 4 with their families and then come out July 5 and see the balloons, pay tribute to our troops and enjoy a nice evening of entertainment."
