O'Leary. Bail set for suspect in Camden homicide CAMDEN Bail was set yesterday at $150,000 for a man charged with beating his mother's boyfriend to death.

Kittrell L. Scott, 25, initially was charged with the aggravated assault of Harold Petty, 48, after the Aug. 1 beating. When Petty died this week of head injuries, the charges were upgraded to murder. The men lived in the same house in the 600 block of North Third Street According to Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Michael Chew-kanes, Petty might have been drunk when the argument began early on Aug.

1, just as he was about to leave the house for work. A fight and wrestling match followed, during which Petty rolled off the hood of a car, striking his head on the ground, Chewkanes told Superior Court Judge Isaiah Steinberg during yesterday's bail hearing. Scott has been held in the Camden County Jail since his arrest on the assault charge. Hospital rights bill signed into law by Kean TRENTON Hospital patients will be protected by a bill of rights spelled out in a law signed by Gov. Thomas H.

Kean yesterday. The law requires hospitals to inform patients, through notices and pamphlets, that they have the right to receive a wide range of details about their hospitalization and care, including complete information about their condition. 21, 1976, said Steven Brizek, an assistant county prosecutor. After two days of digging, "we found nothing of value," Brizek said. But he said the search would continue.

Brizek said the case was reopened in March after lying dormant for 13 years when an investigator with the prosecutor's office, George Braejack, developed new information, which Brizek would not describe. "At this point we're trying to solve a mystery," Brizek said. "The first mystery is where is Mrs. Reyez. Is she alive? Is she dead? If she is, where is her body?" Investigators started the search at the house because Mrs.

Reyes lived there with her husband, Her-nan Reyes, at the time of her disappearance, Brizek said. The couple were in the process of getting a divorce, he said. Brizek said investigators planned to return to the house today and would continue to search there until they either found the woman's body or were satisfied it was not there. At the time of the woman's disappearance, Pompton Lakes police conducted an "exhaustive investigation," but were unable to solve the case, Brizek said. There were never any arrests, he added.

Mrs. Reyes had been discharged from the hospital on March 16, 1976, after undergoing a mastectomy. Brizek said she kept an appointment with her physician the following Friday, and was to return for a follow-up visit that Monday. "She did not appear at the doctor's on Monday," Brizek said. We are proceeding under the assumption she is dead," he said.

Brizek stressed that no one, including Mr. Reyes, was considered a suspect at this point. The couple were married in 1963. Mrs. Reyes returned to her native Chile in December 1974 while her husband remained in the United States, and returned to Pompton Lakes in 1976.

James J.

Florio yesterday received the backing of two Mercer County law enforcement groups and renewed his call for a ban on assault weapons. His Republican opponent, Rep. Jim Courter, attacked Florio's stand on a proposed state bill ning the weapons as opportunistic. Courter, who has not taken a stand on the proposed law, said Florio has a long history of being backed by the National Rifle Association. He called the bill badly flawed.

Florio received the backing of the Mercer County Sheriffs' Officers Policemens' Benevolent Association Local 187 and the Mercer County Brothers Officers Law Enforcement Society yesterday. Courter picked up the support of the Hispanic Law Enforcement Society of Essex County. "There is an issue that is a key to where you stand on crime and who you stand with," Florio said. "These cops can tell you about what it's like to be out there on the dark streets wondering if someone is going to come at you with an Uzi oranAK-47." Courter said the bill in question would ban some assault weapons, but would not ban other guns that could be converted into assault weapons. DBMOND EARRINGS I jjP T.
