2E COURIER-POST, Thursday, February 27, 1986 TELEVISION Whatever you call it, Channel 61 comes on at last in April By CHUCK DARROW For the Courier-Post no problem; the station even had souvenirs hyping its now-down-the-tubes 1985-86 Big Five basketball schedule with those call letters. But WBOC-TV in Salisbury, Md. successfully challenged 61 on the same "sound-alike" grounds as Channel 6. Extensive research has found no similarly-lettered stations, so Ch. 61 is poised to sign-on as WTGI-TV.

According to Dan Slape, 61's vice-president and general manager, he and his crew are looking at an early April date for operation of what will be the Diamond State's first commercial TV outlet since the 1950's (in a previous incarnation, public station 12 was licensed in Wilmington as commercial station WVUE-TV). Slape assures that the delay, while frustrating, has been well utilized. "Our new studios are built," he says, "and our tower (located in Gloucester County) is almost up to the 700-foot level and should be completed in a couple of weeks." When 61 signs on, the bulk of its programming will be comprised of standard independent fare like reruns of network series and syndicated collegiate and professional sports broad-Cdsts VINELAND'S WREY-AM (1440), which has been a Spanish-language station, is switching formats beginning this Saturday. As of March 1, the station will be known as "Country 1440," and will serve up a full-time menu of country music. Part-owner Dennis Dougherty is quarterbacking the station's switch to South Jersey's only full-time country station.

He instituted the successful 1984. TRENTON'S WXKW-FM (10U) has announced a brand new line-up of air personalities. The station's refurbished roster includes Ken Wright (in the 6-10 morning slot), newly-appointed program director Michael Landry (10 3 p.m.), Chris Landon (3 7 p.m.), Willie Twyman (7 midnight) and promotion director Steve McKay (midnight to 6 a.m.). FINE TUNING First they tried WDVI, but WPVI was peeved. Out went DVI and in WBOC.

So it was back to the alpabet once again, and lo and behold, nobody objected to WTGI. And that's what Wilmington's Channel 61 will be called when it finally begins operation early this spring six months after it was supposed to be in business. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently gave the station approval to identify itself as WTGI thus ending six months of frustration over the station's identity. Last summer, when initial plans for Ch. 61 were made public, the station was calling itself WDVI, but WPVI-TV, Ch.

6, felt 61 's ID was too close for comfort and protested to the FCC. The station's next choice was WBOT, with which there seemed to be THURSDAY AFTERNOON THURSDAY EVENING to rJ CD CD Telly Savalas returns to his most famous role in 'Kojak: The Belarus FileCh. 10,9 p.m. CHOICES EB ED ED ED ED El EJ ED ED CD GJJ 3D 2 pm 1 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00 4:30 5:00 5:30 6:00 6:30 Another World Scrabble Super Wheel Ot Price Is Newlywed News News NBC News Password Fortune Right Game One Life To Live General Hospital Merv Griffin News News ABC News No Programming Let's Make Dating Hawaii Five-0 Police Woman Hart To Hart A Deal Game World Capitol Guiding Light Quincy News News CBSNews Turns' "Cham- M.A.S.K.
