BD The Clarion-Ledger Sunday. October 3, 1993 Late Central Arkansas bomb topples Delta State 34-27 By Lm Baker Claim-Ledger Staff Writer CLEVELAND In a seesaw battle, it was Central Arkansas that got the last lift. The Bears scored on an 85-yard bomb with 3 minutes, seconds remaining to post a 34-27 victory over Delta State in a Gulf South Conference battle. It was the second straight loss for the Statesmen, and this one may hurt more than last week's lopsided 58-17 loss at North Alabama. "I'm devastated tonight," said DSU coach Todd Knight as his team fell to 2-2, 0-2 in the GSC.

"But I'm encouraged knowing we could have beaten Central Arkansas, when they were picked third in the conference." The Statesmen trailed most of the game, but had managed only two on third down. DSU punted and UCA started at its own 8 with just over four minutes to play. Two plays netted seven yards. On third down from their own 15, the Bears made the game's biggest play. Quarterback Ken Collums threw left to split end Tim Woods, who slipped by free safety Henry Johnson and outran cornerback Willie Allen in an 85-yard chase to the DSU end zone and the game-winning score.

"That last (scoring) play killed us," Knight said. "Our guy tried to knock the ball down instead of tackling. "But, tonight, we made a lot more mistakes than that." The greatest problem for Delta State was UCA tailback Hosea Knowlton. The 5-10, 214-pound battering ram gained 177 yards on 36 carries. He accounted for all the Bear points but the final touchdown.

Knowlton hammered over four touchdowns fron6, 10, 3 and 6 yards. He also ran for a pair of 2-pointers. Collums created trouble for DSU defenders, completing 1 0 of 2 1 passes for 1 67 yards. Delta State's Greg Walker continued to be shadowed tightly. He was held to 61 yards on 21 carries all but 12 of the Statesman rushing yards.

That left the DSU offense hanging on the right arm of Crowe, who kept the Statesmen in the game. He fired two touchdowns each to Carlos Bonner, from 7 and 28 yards, and Redd, from 59 and 9 yards. Crowe completed 21 of 31 for 245 yards. STATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL moved in front midway through the fourth quarter on a six-play, 59-yard drive. David Crowe's 27-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Redd and Steve Coker's point-after kick put Delta State ahead 27-26.

On the ensuing kickoff return, Central Arkansas' Tim Woods fumbled. DSU's Michael Robbins recovered at the Bears' 42. When Greg Walker ran left for nine yards on the next play, Delta State appeared in position to win its first GSC game. Then things fell apart. Walker lost four yards on second down and Crowe 4lk IT 1 ELLECTTDSDCC CSQTTtf APPLIANCE TV STEREO SUPER STORE -264-8955 MONROE STREET ELLIS AVENUF WalONfT Hatdy Si in the Arbor iv! i i -482-0033 Hwy 39 East Gale Center Rick GuyThe Clarion-Ledger Millsaps' Jason McCormick beats Thomas Nelson for a 1-yard TD catch.

Dent, a runner-up in this, the richest event on the Senior PGA Tour, the past two years, birdied all the par-5s in a 6-under-par 66. The tour's biggest hitter was at 131 after two rounds on the Tanglewood course and he needed the 13-under total to withstand an outstanding scoring exhibition that produced two course record-matching 64s. Trevino, who shared the first-round lead with Dent, birdied the last hole for a 67 that put him one back going to today's final round of the chase for a $225,000 first prize.

DeWitt Weaver and Jim Colbert, the winner of this title the last two years, each matched the course record set by Gary Player in the 1974 PGA Championship. Weaver was third at 135. Bob Estes shot a 5-under-par 67 and held a two-stroke lead over course record-breaker John Inman after three rounds of the Buick South-em Open at Pine Mountain, Ga. Estes had a 54-hole total of 10-un-der 206, while Inman'a 64 on the Callaway Gardens Mountain View course got him in contention in the $700,000 tournament Steven Richardson of England held off a charge by American Chip Beck with a birdie on the 18th hole for a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the German Masters at Monsheim. AUTO RACING: If anybody catches Date Earnhardt sweating, he'd probably say it's because he's hot inside his Chevrolet and not that Rusty Wallace is on his tailpipe.

When NASCAR's Winston Cup drivers reached Michigan for the Champion Spark Plug 400 on Aug. 15, Earnhardt had a 341 -point lead over Wallace. It seemed that a sixth driving championship for Earnhardt was just a matter establishing the margin of victory. Instead, Wallace has hacked away at the gap in his Pontiac in each of the six races since Earnhardt's lead reached its peak. He'll continue his pursuit in today's Tyson Holly Farms 400 at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway.

The points now stand at 3,702 for Earnhardt, 3,620 for Wallace. Earnhardt will start 10th today and Wallace 1 1th. Ernie Irvan is on the pole, and Jackson native Lake Speed will start 19th. TENNIS: Top-seeded Steffi Graf and Czech Jana Novotna won semifinal round matches at the Volkswagen Card Cup in Leipzig, Germany, setting up a rematch of their dramatic Wimbledon final. Graf won her 39th straight match, but struggled in slipping past Austria's Judith Wiesner 6-7 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3.

Earlier in the quarter, Presley hit a diving McCormick on a post pattern for a 32-yard touchdown giving the Majors the lead for good at 12-10. "They were keying in on me, so we had to go to the passing game," said Gladney, who finished with 146 yards on 21 carries. His 1-yard run at 4:38 of the first quarter capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive that gave the Majors a 7-0 lead. The Majors put the game out of reach in the third quarter with 16 unanswered points.

Presley's third TD pass, which doubled his season output, was a 7-yarder to Walker and was set up by Gladney's 76-yard run. Kicker Johnny Daves hit a 27-yard field goal, and cornerback Will Hall intercepted an Aaron Brand pass and raced 47 yards to score. "Our defense did a good job gang tackling, especially in the second half," said Millsaps coach Tommy Ranager. "We only had that one bad breakdown (on the Wasp TD pass)." "We never play well down here," said Wasp coach Lou Wacker. The Millsaps Majors found a new offensive weapon to add to their arsenal Saturday against Emory and Henry.

Junior quarterback Kacy Presley connected on 12 of 21 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Majors to a 34-10 non-conference win before 1,250 at Alumni Field. Thirteenth-ranked Emory and Henry dropped to 4-1 and saw its 17-game regular-season winning streak come to an end. The Majors, 3-1, had relied on the running of tailback Kelvin Gladney through the first three games. However, they came out firing in the first half as Presley went 10-for-16 for 157 yards. "My offensive line was giving me plenty of protection," said Presley.

"Even though I got hit a few times, I had a lot of time to find my receivers." Presley's most impressive series came right before the half with the Majors leading 12-10. Starting from his own 22 with 1:23 remaining, Presley hit four straight passes. Valley came back on its next possession to pull to within 14-13 on a 8-yard TD pass from quarterback Cliff Robinson to Victor Cullen. The Delta Devils lined up for the extra-point but the Jaguar defenders came up the middle and blocked a low kick from Phimsoutham, a native of Thailand.

Valley still had its chances. The Delta Devils forced three turnovers after the blocked kick but failed to convert. A interception by Felix Wicks, a fumble recovery by Brandon Dominique and a fumble recovery by Eddie Malone went for naught. The halftime score was 7-7. 1 Southern got on the scoreboard first on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Lindsey Scott at the 8:05 mark of the second quarter; Valley answered just two plays later when Robinson connected with sophomore wideout Steve Booze on a 59-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 7.

Robinson lofted the pass towards Booze, who out-jumped a Jaguar defender at the 15-yard line, and raced untouched into the endzone. Quarterback Honoree Britton, who was injured last week against Jackson State, did not play. ITTA BENA Mississippi Valley coach Larry Dorsey said special teams would be a big key against Southern University. It is one time Dorsey probably wishes he would have been wrong. A blocked PAT off the foot of Valley's Nat Phimsoutham late in the third quarter proved to be the difference as Southern slipped by the Delta Devils 14-13 Saturday night at Magnolia Stadium.

Afterwards, Dorsey blamed his team's offense instead of the lack of execution on special teams. "Just another bad performance offensively for our us," Dorsey said. "We're not getting the job done. We had so many chances, and we weren't able to convert. "We played a hell of a game on defense.

But we've got to go back to the woodshed offensively." Southern, ranked No. 21 in The Sports Network Division I-AA football poll improved to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
