C-12-INDEPENDENT(AM) TeleVues PRESS-TELEGRAM (PM) L«M »»«. c.i.t., TM«., SM*. K. m? Paul Lynde quits law to practice medicine The Country Parson *«iniiiiiHMiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiu = TOP VI TCXD-A.Y By BOB MARTIN TV-Radio Editor "The Paul Lynde Show" came under the ax and won't be around for a second season. But Lynde himself was luckier -and perhaps funnier -than his show, and he'll be coming into our homes regularly again this season. I'm glad to have him around, myself. Paul may not appeal to everyone, but I consider him to be one of the more amusing performers on the tube. The great grimacer has given up the practice of law and joined the Son of Temperatures R i s i n g , otherwise known as "The New Temperatures Rising Show," as Dr. Mercy, the administrator of a private hospital called Capital Hospital in Washington, D.C. Premiere of the half- hour situation comedy series is at 8 tonight on ABC (Channel 7). There will be a lot of new faces besides Lynde's on the series, inasmuch as PAUL LYNDE Occupation Change Cleavon Little is the show's only first-season survivor. Maybe at Capital Hospital they believe in capital punishment. L i t t l e , you'll recall, plays Dr. Jerry Noland, a senior resident dedicated to antagonizing any and all in authority. Joining Lynde and Lit- tle as cast regulars will be Sudie Bond as Martha Mercy, m o t h e r of Dr. Mercy and owner and permanent resident of the hospital; Barbara Cason as Miss Tillis, the dedicated head of admitting and accounting; Jennifer Darling as Windy Winchester, R.N., and John Dchner as society d o c t o r Charles Cleveland Clayer. 1 must admit that I didn't watch "Temperatures Rising" very often last season. It didn't appeal to me when I tuned it in a couple of times yearly in the season. However, several persons told me it got better as it w e n t along, and it attracted enough viewers to survive, even if most of its cast members didn't. W i t h Lynde and the other new cast members -- and, we hope, better scripts -- "The New Temperatures Rising Show" may prove to be well worth watching. A WEEK AGO I rapped the "Maude" series for preaching in its two-part "borne people rob folks with guns -- olhtts juit give them credit tards." Copyist 1973. by (rank A. Cljlk. program about Walter's drinking problem. That was before I had seen the second episode, and I must say that I found the concluding half to be less objectionable than the first. Last Tuesday night's show was funny all the way, and if there was any preaching it wasn't too obvious. If I had seen only it -- and not the first half -- I would have made no criticism. "Maude" is one of my favorite shows -- except when it tries to deliver a message in too heavy- handed a fashion. THE SPLASHDOWN and recovery of the Skylab astronauts will be covered today by the three major TV networks. NEW TEMPERATURES RISING SHOW, 8 p.m., Ch. 7.
