Among the changes, there are teachers for each class rather than one homeroom instructor, students are required to change clothes for physical education and they undoubtedly will have more homework. "It will be a big shock to his system because he always got his homework done at school," said Sharon Schewe, Billy's mother. "Now, he'll be bringing most of it home." Besides the academics, Bernardi said the middle school experience also can be a time of growth for students as they join various clubs and activities. "All of these are tied to a higher level of independence and more choices for them" she said. But perhaps the biggest challenge is making friends with students from two or three other elementary schools who have merged into one middle school.

"I've tried to talk to him and tell him he's got to be careful," Sharon Schewe said. "He's going to be around a bunch of different kids coming in that he doesn't know and I don't know how well they'll (get along)." Billy said he is excited about joining the basketball team since Mom said no to football. Becky plans to try out for volleyball and is considering drama club. Choosing the path for their lives is what middle school is all about. "I used to tell my boys, Tvfow we talked about this and you said you weren't going to grow up on Sharon Schewe said.
