given her more pleasure than working with Sears on a line that was solid, very conservative and so exciting. Then thecurtain went upon lObeau-tiful models who performed Tiegs line. Naturally. Tiegs herself did not model, although only a few years before she might have been one of the clotheshorses prancing about 'up there. BY ALL accounts, Tiegs will be no flash in the pan.

As long as she is correctly exposed, as long as the aura she projects is that of Mason-jar Middle America, as long as she stays with quality mass products that are mutually compatible, she will work and be disproportionately rewarded for that work. (Tiegs takes home $5 million a year from Sears, Roebuck alone.) Tiegs is wedded to Sears, Roebuck now. She has promised to love, honor and obey. A tenacious social convention one whose stength has not grown less with time holds that when a woman marries, her veil, lifted for the cermonial kiss at the altar, comes down again, effacing her sexuality; She can still be provocative, but she must not actively provoke men other than her mate. She must be an exemplary wife and loving mother.

But we know that, once again, cheesecake has been passed around America's coffee tables and been passed off asapplie pie. But I couldn't have signed thecontract unless I really believed in jeans Very soon, the Sears in-house organ announced the birth of Cheryl Tiegs jeans trumpeting value, styling and quality. NOW THAT Cheryl Tiegs' jeans had realized their commerical potential. Sears grabbed the opportunity to display its recent blue-chip acquisition to the annual meeting. For the first time in its 93-year history. Sears was inviting someone other than a company director to address its shareholders.

At a company dinner in a Minneapolis hotel banquet room, Tiegs was seated between Sears chairman and chief executive officer Edward R. Telling. 62, whom the New York Times had just described as "white-haired and fatherly." and Sears president Edward A. Brennam, 47, whom the Times had described as being "built like a wrestler." Across from her was Sears' former chairman Arthur Wood. 69, lanky and aristocratic.

Tiegs was the only woman at the head table. At the shareholders' meeting the next day, Tiegs listened backstage as Brennan introduced her. SHE STEPPED to the dais. In her Hi -minute speech, which Sears had written for her, she thanked them all for being there, told them all how gratifying it was for her, a former Sears catalog girl, to be back at Sears, and how nothing in her whole career had Continued from Page 1 hit 1 55, she came to me and said. 'Stan.

I have to get back to work now." Modeling regularly for Harper's Bazaar and for a cornucopia of Vogues English, Australian, French, Italian Tiegs enjoyed the nomadic prestige of the professionally rootless; one week she flew to Honolulu, another week to Rome to model the collections. THIS BABY was made satin-smooth when Sports Illustrated booked her for its annual high-circulation swimsuit issue. She posed as a sex kitten in a bathing suit designed by "Alley Cat;" the shot was captioned, in the rib-poking language of a man's magazine, "sitting pretty in six inches of ocean." In subsequent "girlie" issues of Sports Illustrated there were fewer inches of ocean and more inches of Cheryl showing. Until, in 1978. she posed for the magazine wearing a see-through fishnet bathing suit.

She was, for all practical purposes, naked. This issue was banned in Boston. But second to success, nothing succeeds like controversy, and it went on to become Sports Illustrated's "No. 1 letter-provoke" of the year. "Yeah, those Sports Illustrated items got a huge reaction the first one she did and all hence," comments Dragoti, not very much a superintendent of the queen's English.

"Some people got very irate about them. There was global controversy." THE FISHNET bathing suit shot was to make Tings' career' a career in which processed cheesecake, beauti fully packaged, would become homemade apple pie. For the all-but-naked woman would, a fast three years later, become the spokesperson for that most conservative of American corporations Sears, Roebuck. In New York, ABC was ready to give Tiegs the heady news that soon she would be able to set her own style. The ABC merchandising division was negotiating a deal with Sears, Roebuck that would be the biggest coup of her career her own signature clothes line.

Dressed in their corporate livery, three ABC executives had approached Allen Fredman, vice president of Colonial Corp. of America, a division of the Kayser-Roth Corp. and one of the major producers of apparel for the chain circuit. "I only deal with three customers: Sears, Penney and K-Mart I am Middle America," Fredman says grandly. SEARS HAD long been attracted to Tiegs back in 1966, she wasthecom-pany's catalog cover girl.

Now, 13 years later, her credibility pretested, she signed a letter of understanding with Kayser-Roth which guaranteed her a seven-figure annual income from Sears, as well as a substantial share in the profits. Kayser-Roth Colonial would manufacture the clothes and sell them to Sears; Tiegs would receive a royalty on whatever Sears sold. "It was my lawyer who did it," Tiegs says of Russ Goldsmith, yet another super. "He got me the most fantastic merchandising contract design control, quality control, control over type of garment, and a strong say in MR. AND MRS.

Dark clubs and lightly subjects force him to estimate the number of feet he will be from his target beforehand, set the motor drive and flash, and simply click away, holding the camera above his head, below his chin or at his hip. He recalls the time Hawn did not want to be photographed dancing with a man wearing a wedding band.

To get the shot, he says, he just danced near the fobidden couple, and with theeam-era at his side, snapped off a few fast frames. DeNiro and Jack Nicholson were not as easy, but he got off a few shots while they were ranting at him on separate occasions. DeNiro was "making an offensive Italian gesture." HE RECALLS that Linda Ronstadt. her hair in pincurls outside her dressing room during the Central Park run of "Pirates of Penzance," cursed him and knocked the flash off his camera with a newspaper, sending it crashing to the ground inches from the foot of New York Mayor Edward Koch. However, Corkery says he knows "when to draw the line" in pursuing his subjects.

"I would not go on someone's property." he says. "But my feeling is that, if they're in public places, they're up for grabs. "But celebrities have to have their private lives," he says. "It's crazy when they duck. They don't realize how silly it looks and the best way to a void a picture is to just look down," Corkery says.

"That makes the worst shot. Some of them duck when we don't even want their picture. It's really funny." For the most part, he says he tries to keep on the good side of his subjects. 99 ucach FINAL COST TO YOU Qmagic) m.vumr HI 2r nw (2 WITH MFC. ki I WITH MFC.
