7B COURIER-POST, Thursday, February 6, 1986 300 attend funeral of TV documentary welfare mother Associated Press EAST ORANGE Hundreds of people yesterday mourned the death of a young woman who was briefly cast into the national limelight by a television documentary in which she complained of the welfare system on which she and other single mothers were often dependent. Among those paying their respects to 24-year-old Alice Cassandra Jackson, whodiedSundayfrominjuries suffered in a fall, were CBS newsman Bill Moyers, who produced the documen tary, and civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson. More than 300 relatives, friends, politicians and reporters jammed the Green Pastures Baptist Church here for Ms. Jackson's two-hour memorial service.

Burial was scheduled for yesterday at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenil-worth, but Sam Arnold, director of the Perry Funeral Home Inc. in Newark, said it was delayed at the request of the Essex County Medical Examiner's office. DEATH NOTICES Arnold said the medical examiner asked to pick up Ms. Jackson's body today. He said he did not know why the medical examiner wanted the body, and no one answered telephone calls yesterday afternoon to the examiner's office.

Ms. Jackson, who lived in Newark, was one of several young women featured in the Jan. 25 documentary, "CBS Reports: The Vanishing Family Crisis in Black America." During the program, Ms. Jackson said she disliked welfare "because it makes me lazy I like to work." "Alice has the attention of the nation," said Rev. Jackson, an unsuccessful candidate for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination.

"She showed with boldness the agony of living with reduced options. "Alice is America's conscience. Alice is America's opportunities," said Rev. Jackson, who is not related to Ms. Jackson.

Others who attended the ceremony included Essex County Executive Peter Shapiro, Newark Mayor Kenneth Gibson and his challenger, Newark Councilman Sharpe James. Ms. Jackson, the mother of three, fell last Thursday on a stairway landing in the low-income Stella Wright housing project where she lived. She died Sunday without regaining consciousness. The CBS documentary spawned a debate between those who claimed it showed that the welfare system creates dependency upon itself, and oUien.mcludingMs.Jackson'sfamily, who said it was too negative in portraying black life.

The program focused on the lives of several black women who chose motherhood at an early age, although they had no independent means of support or partners to contribute to their support. "When we look at this challenge of family don't point to CBS. It's deeper than that," Rev. Jackson said to the mourners. "It was there before they arrived and it was there after they left." Speaking to 26-year-old Timothy McSeed, the father of Ms.

Jackson's children, Rev. Jackson said, "You have a burden and a challenge. You still remain a father of children. You still remain alive. There's nothing more powerful than a redeemed individual." Ms.

Jackson, who was filmed for the show during the birth of her third child, Hakim, is survived by Malik, 3, and Antwan, 2. Moyers said, "She was very sweet and forthcoming with me and became a real person to us. That's why we're here." OBITUARIES ALICE CASSANDRA JACKSON Malik (left) and Makim The Rev. Herbert Daughtry, national minister of the House of the Lord Churches in Brooklyn, N.Y., said he did not know Ms. Jackson, but wanted to show his "solidarity" with others who faced her dilemma.

"I didn't know her, but I've seen her all across the United States in that symbolic sense," he said. The documentary focused too much on failure, Rev. Daughtry said, asking, "Why not show those young people who have succeeded in getting off welfare?" Moyers said people he worked with in Newark "say it (the program) was real and effective." But Ms. Jackson's mother said Tuesday her daughter felt misled by the producers of the documentary and that the show was too negative. Nora Jackson said her daughter "didn't like welfare.

She liked to work." Alice Jackson, who graduated from Newark's Malcolm X. Shabazz High School and took accounting courses at a business college, had a full-time job inaday-carecenterbeforeshebecame pregnant with her first child. "So she was used to having money. She liked nice things," Mrs. Jackson said.

She described her daughter as "friendly and outgoing" with a "host of friends." Ms. Jackson's cousin, 36-year-old Norma Artis, said, "She was very pleasant, what you'd expect from a teen-ager, a young adult." Another cousin, Lymon Thompson, 42, of Newark, said he did not mind the television cameras and reporters at the funeral. "I think this helps bring out the struggle among the It opens the way. It would help them further their education," he said. Foundation.

She also was a member of the Camden city, Camden County and the Tri-County Special Teacher's Associations. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce B. Smythe of Westfield; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The memorial service will be at 1 1 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield, 124 E.
