Nebraska played as well as Minnesota and cer tainly deserved no worse than a tie That Is the way Coach Bernie Bier man sized up his Gophers' 7 to victory over the Cornhuskers Sat urday. "The line, defensively at least, showed some improvement, but the backs slipped from their game or last week." the Minnesota coach stated after the 'game.

"The Nebraska game proved rather conclu sively that the team needs considerable polishing before it will be ready for the hard Big Ten games coming UP Coach Dana X. Bible of the Ne-braskans was well pleased with the performance given by his boys. "Thev gave a wonderful exhibition particularly in the first half and had they been favored with a little better luck, they might have been the victors Instead of Minnesota," Bible commented. "Nebraska looked like the stronger team In the first half, but the Gophers came back with a rush to stop our best plays in the final two periods. It was an exceedingly hard game for this early in the season and I believe that both teams will show much improvement as the season progresses.

"Minnesota will come around. The Gophers' line play was ragged in spots, but with another game or two it should find means of opening up for the backs to drive through and when that occurs, those Gopher ball carriers are going places. The players are there but few backfield men can break loose if the line fails to function properly." Officials in Huddles; New Rules Confusing Those four men in white. Memorial Btadium, Blooruington, Oct. 15. UP) Indiana's univer- ity football team displayed a varied attack to defeat Iowa here today 12 to 0 and gam its first western conference victory of the season. A sparkling smashing 24-yard dagh off the Iowa left tackle by Don Vel- ler, slippery littie halfback from Linton. clinched the Indiana victory on the third play of the second half.

Lyons In Starring Role. The Hooslers had variety In their scoring. In addition to the touchdown, they counted a place-kick for a point after touchdown by Lyons, giant Negro end.

A 25-yard field goal also by Lyons and a safety scored when Schmidt, substitute Iowa halfback stepped out of the end xone while punting from behind his goal line. i It was the Hoosier's first victory over the Hawkeyes In the history of their football relations. The Iowa players, smarting from stunning defeat In their Big Ten opener at Wisconsin a week ago, stepped out at the start of the game to outplay Indiana throughout the first period. Coming to life in the second quarter, however, Indiana's backs began to slide through good holes In the Iowa line for gains and when the ball got Into scoring territory, a wild few minutes of missed opportunities and penalties got under way. The Hooslers pushed deep Into Hawkeye ground by the longest gain of the game, a S5-yard forward pans from Opasyk that Dickey plucked out of the air and ran with to the 19-yard line for a total gain of 64 yards.

Jesse Eabb, flashy Negro halfback from Fort Wayne, and Bob Jones, plunging fullback, from Wabash, carried it almost to the Iowa goal line but the Hooslers failed to make a touchdown when Fabb, catching a fourth down, pass from Opasik fell Inches from the final chalk mark. The drive led to two points however, when Schmidt misjudged his distance from the scrimmage on the punt and stepped too far back. Hawks Make Scoring Rid. The Hawkeyes kicked off from their owa 20-yard line after the safety and Veller scooped it up for a long return to the Iowa 4S-yard line. Two forward passes put the ball on the 20-yard line and then after Indiana failed to gain, Lyons dropped back to placekick the field goal.

He missed his first attempt, but the Hawkeyes were offside and the sec ond try was good. The Hawkeyes flashed a sustained drive late in the final period, taking the ball from their own 14-yard line down to the Indiana 31-yard line on a sweeping 17-yard run by Page, sub half buck, and a long pass from Teyro to Loufek, good for 21 yards. Here the threat ended however when further pass attempts were knocked down by a suddenly alert Indiana secondary. lowa Pos. Indlana Miller LE.

The Gophers, fighting desperately to register a touchdown, finally had their efforts rewarded late in the second quarter when a poor punt by Sauer helped to pave the way for Minnesota'! score. With the ball on i Nebraska's 34-yard line, Sauer was forced to kick into the teeth cf the brisk wind which blew from the west throughout the game. Sauer, hurried In his kick, booted the ball almost straight Into the air where It was caught hy the wind and came down on Nebraska's 37-yard line whence it bounced to Nebraska's 31-yard line where a Minnesota player felt on It after several members of both teams sought to ground It. Bob Tenner, all-city end at Minne- Mpoli West high school. Is rated regular wingman his first season out for the Gopher eleven. He did not report for freshman football, devot ing himself to his studies entirely.

Tenner first reported last spring and immediately made a favorable impression. He is 19 years old, stands six feet tall and weighs 1S5 pounds. both in hit passing and kicking. The wonder of it all wan that he got away his boots as well as he did. His passing was off color on most of hit attempts.

He hurried his throws and usually the player for whom the pass was intended, was not ready for it, or he, was in no position to receive it. Lund was far more effective with his passes against Purdue the previous week. He shot the ball directly into the hands of the intended receiver. Saturday several of his toss- was splendid, considering the weath er conditions, while In rushing he displayed as much drive as any man on the field, breaking away for some good runs. Another noticeable weakness In the Gophers' play was their crude blocking.

The ball carrier followed his Interference, but the men Interfering, more often than not, proved a hindrance since they failed to take out the would-be tackier. The Gopher line was considerably improved In the final half. It charged hard and much faster and as a consequence the Nebraskans, Instead of charging through the opposition for gains, were tossed back for numer ous losses. It was quite a different forward wall from the one that functioned so weakly In the first two periods. Larson in Game Only One Quarter, but Stars Butch Larson, the rangy lad from Duluth, saw service only In the final quarter Saturday, but ho gave a con vincing demonstratlen, of how the wing should lie played.

His perform ance undoubtedly will earn him a regular job on the varsity squad. Larson replaced Brad Robinson at the start of the fourth period and on the first play called, snared a long pass rrom Lund out of the hands or several Nebraska players. The play put the Gophers deop In Nebraska terrltruy. But Larson wss even better on the line. He harassed the NebraHka ball carriers not a little as he charged in swiftly and dropped them in their tracks.

He did a fine Job of eluding Nebraska lnterferers and performed his. duties in a manner that must have delighted the staff of coaches. Tengler Does Bucking But It Goes for Naught Carl Tengler, understudy to Jack Manders at fullback, attracted some attention early In the final nerlod. He crashed through the center of the line on two successive bucks for substantial gains, but 'It was his misfortune to have the Gophers penalized for offside each time. On his third try he was tossed on the line of scrimmage for no gain.
