PAGE 28 A I I I in Who Came To Dinner' Still Fun By MICHELINE KEATING Citizen Drama Critic The PJaybox Theater grouj chose to open the 1966-67 seaso with the vintage, comedy b. Afoss.Hart and S. Kaui man, "The Man Who Came Dinner," and carh-e up with on of its better productions. With some of the lines aptly a the 1939 comedy proved solid writing is alway; entertaining and keeping a plo within the bounds of credibility is still the most effective way to capture an audience. THE CONTENT is based loosely upon the acerbic character of the late New York drama i i Alexander Woollcott, noted for his barbed tongue and caustic wit and was generally accepted as the writers' rebuttal to some personal wounds.

Sheridan lecturing before a women's group in a small Ohio town, slips on the ice coating his hostess' driveway and becomes her captive houseguest. It is a natural springboard for almost anything to happen and almost everything does. The parade of characters include culture-kicking small towners, writers, Hollywood characters, the great of the theater world, and some put-upon servants. IT IS WACKY in a thoroughly delightful and believable way and the Playbox players have made the most of it. Directed by Marjorie Hilts, the comedy clips along at a good pace with the small stage being used excellent advantage.

As with any large cast pro fessional, amateur or student -there is a considerable variation in the.quality of performance Topping the cast in quality is Kneeland and it is a joy to have her back on a Tucson stage again. Her characterization is thoroughly professional, which she is, tempered by perfec comedy timing, smooth sophisti cation and the ability to mesh all of her scenes into high gear You couldn't ask for a better performance than hers. RIGHT AT HER HEELS is Henry Kendrick as the acidulous Whiteside. This is the type of role that fits him to a and he gives it substance and clarity. He is caustic without being nasty, selfish without completely disregarding others and allowing the milk of human kindness to peek through his highly shellacked shell.

Pierre Janssen made the bit part of a science savant stand out. Blanche Berkowitz was constantly amusing as a put-upon nurse. Roger Reed and Pat Zimmerman were good as the unwilling hosts, as were Howard Weiss and Ann Wofford as their rebelling teen-age offspring. Ed NohJechek and Vicki Williams as the household's couple, gave solid interpretations. ALICE KING, as Whiteside's ong-suffering and efficient sec- etary, was pleasantly and acceptably wholesome.
