CM-INDEPENDENT (MA) TeleYues PRESS-TElEGRAM(m) Long Btach, Calif., Tun., July 17, mi MARMADUKE Al Green on rock special By BOB MARTIN TV-Radio Editor "Chicago in the Rockies"? I've worked in Chicago and I've gone to college in Boulder, Colo., and I don't remember seeing any mountains when I was in the former or many skyscrapers when I was in the latter. Now, "Denver in the Rockies" -- that would be closer to it. Why didn't John Denver think of it first? "Chicago in the Rockies" is the intriguing title of a half-hour special to be presented on ABC (Channel 7) at 8 tonight. Produced by Dick Clark, it stars the seven-member contemporary musical group Chicago. Special guest star is Al Green, rated the No. 1 male vocalist of 1972 in the year end polls of all three music trade publications, Record World, Cashbox and Billboard. The publication Rolling Stone also named him "Rock and Roll Star of the Year." The "Rockies" part of the show's title comes frorr. the fact that it was produced on a 3,000-acre ranch not far from Boulder, at an altitude of about 9,000 feet. Called the Caribou Ranch, it is owned by the man responsible for- Chicago's success, James William Guericio, the group's producer. He and the seven members of Chicago, and their families, live at the ranch part of the year. Guercio's parents and three younger brothers and several others live there the year round. After buying the ranch from Transamerica Corp., Guercio installed a three- story recording studio in what once was a horse barn. Not only has Chicago used the studio, but also War, Stephen Stills and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It is considered one of the finest, most advanced recording studios in America. The ranch contains the largest privately owned waterfall in the United States. For a number sung by Green at the waterfall, the four-wheel- drive vehicle transporting the taping equipment had to negotiate a winding narrow road down a 300- foot ravine. For Chicago's opening number, "Free," the crew used a helicopter, pulling away from a herd of wiM horses to take in a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains. The four-day shooting schedule was wrapped up with a barbecue, which was the scene for the last two numbers. Six of the seven members of Chicago are natives of the Windy City, and all seven studied music there. Like Guercio, most of them went to DePaul University. The members of Chicago are: Peter Cetera, bass player-vocalist; Terry Kath, guitarist- vocalist; Robert Lamm, pianist-vocalist; Lee Loughnane, trumpet and background vocalist; James Pankqw, trombone and percussion; Walter Parazaider, woodwinds and percussion, and Daniel Seraphine, drums. The group has turned out five gold record albums and a gold single, "Saturday in the Park." It won Billboard's 1972 Top Album, Duo Group Award and 1972 Top Album Artists Award, Playboy's 1972 Award for Best Small Combo for "Chicago III," and Playboy's 1973 Award for Best Small Combo for "Chicago V." Soul singer Green, the only guest on the show, is a 26-year-old native of Arkansas. He sings "You Ought to Be With Me" by the waterfall and later joins Chicago inside the recording studio at the ranch for "Tired of Being Alone." AN HOUR-LONG musical special, "Murray the K -- Blast From the Past," will precede "Chicago in the Rockies" on Channel 7 at 7. Murray the K will be joined by five disc jockeys from various parts of the United States in presenting music of the sixties. In addition to a reminiscent "photo album with sound," the show will feature live performances by Dionne Warwicke, Paul Anka and the Association.
