The castle which houses some 50,000 priceless art objects represents the dream of the late Samuel Hill, son-in-law of "empire builder" James J.

Hill. Samuel Hill married the railroader's daughter Mary in 1S88. He was president of the Minneapolis Trust Co. for several years btfore he moved to Washington early in the century. Maryhill, named for his wife, was intended for their home.

Queen Marie of Romania dedicated it as a museum in 1926, and last year it was visited by more than 51,000 persons. TUES. THRU SAT. 9 A.M. TO 5:30 P.M.

Privately, members the commission, said they opposed to any changes that wipe out the lower tele effect you. And if you're on the broadcast ing end you're probably used to living on pins and needles by this time, so nothing that happens can make you much more jittery. The commission Thursday froze all pending applications for new television stations more than 300 of them. Before any more will be approved, FCC will make up its mind which way it's going to jump.

CHANNELS CROWDED Specifically, it will have to decide whether it is going to jack video up into higher frequencies, which would mean that present receivers would have to be con verted, or revise the engineering rules covering transmitters so that more of them can be crowded into the present operating channels. It will be six to nine months be fore the decision is made. Hearings were held on the question last week, but there will be a lot more study and at least a couple! did of engineering conferences later this year before any policy deci sion is made. And the final regu ten this lations will take some months longer. cies The only immediate direct effect in Minnesota is the freezing of three applications for new TV stations.

Two are for Minneapolis, by the Independent Merchants Broadcasting Co. and Beck Studios, and one for St. Paul, by WMIN Broadcasting Co. Two new stations have already that ing the will been authorized in Minneapolis and these are not affected by the to freeze One is WTCN-TV, owned by Minnesota Broadcasting and the other is KTRV, by Northwest Broadcasting Co. KSTP- TV, which has been operating for several months, is also unaffected by the FCC order.

six There are no applications pend to ing before the commission for sta tions in North or South Dakota or western Wisconsin. INDUSTRY UNAFRAID The broadcasting industry, con cerned about investments in new stations as well as marketing new receivers, reacted more placidly than you would expect when the "FCC lowered the boom. One reason for the philosophic calm was the industries estimate that nothing drastic can happen for five years or longer. The theory behind this is that if FCC decides to push TV upstairs into the ultra-high frequencies, outmoding present receivers and transmitters, the channel allocations and engineering standards can't reasonably be completed before the end of next year. After that it will take the manufacturers from three to five years to design the new transmitters and receivers and probably somewhat longer than that to get them into anything like full production.
