MONDAY EVENING. JANUARY 6, 1958 A I CITIZEN PAGE 7 Will You Be Among 50 To 60 Dead In '58 On Pinia County Highways? By JOHN BARNETT Will you be a fatal traffic accident statistic for Pima County in 1958? Chances are you won't--yet it is almost certain that 50 to 60 persons will die on county highways this year. You could be one of them. Here, based on statistics from last year's fatal traffic count, are some facts and figures to show how and where your fatal accident may happen--if you are a doomed. The probability is that if you become a fatal statistic will be an adult a 32 years old.

You will be a civil- Ian and a year- round resident area. Of the 53 persons -who died on county highways in 1957, 30 were local residents. Eleven were out- of-staters (5 Californians), eight were Arizona residents from out of town (including one each from Sells, Ajo, Ft. Huachuca and Nogales) and the remaining four were Davis-Monthan You will probably be an adult because 42 of those killed last year were 18 years or older--the oldest 84. The other 11 rajiged in age from 5 months to 16 years.

Thirty-two was the If you are among the unlucky, chances are you will be killed in a 53 Pima 55ead In 1957 of the Tucson one-car crash on the Benson Highway. In an overwhelming 28 of the 44 fatal traffic accidents in the county last year only one vehicle was involved. Nine of these accidents killed pedestrians. The remainder killed passengers of the autos involved. Fourteen crashes involved two or more vehicles; two involved a train and a car or truck; one each involved an auto and a motorcycle or a bicycle.

LEADING KILLER among highways was the Benson Highwaj', with eight fatal accidents causing 11 deaths. Figures for other local highways were Casa Grande Highway, the Freeway and Ajo road, 3 each; and Florence Highway, 1. No one died on the Nogales Highway in Pima County last year. Your fatal collision, again as? suraing you have one, will be investigated by the Arizona Highway Patrol. That department investigated 18 of last year's fatal crashes-- compared with 2 South Tucson officers, 11 by sheriff's deputies and 13 by city police.

Though the difference is slight, odds favor the probability that your death will be blamed on someone else--probably the driver of the car in which you were riding. In 24 cases authorities said the dead persons themselves were at fault; in 25 someone else received the blarne. KILLER, incidentally, -probably won't be convicted of anything more i than or reckless driving. One man drew a nine-month jail term for negligent homicide last ye.ar. Four of the county's deaths appeared unavoidable--or at least tossups as far as placing the blame was concerned.

The highway patrol will probably blame your one-car accident on too much speed, too much liquor or too little sleep--or a combination of the three. This is the grim picture Of death as it most often occurred on Pima highways and roads in 1957. At least 50 people would like to know what can be done to erase it --for they will be part of it at this time next year. 53 Deaths In '57 Add Up To Lowest Pima County Traffic Toll Since 1953 Pima County recorded in 1957 its lowest highway death total since 1953. Fifty-three persons were killed in the county last year.

In 1953, 50 persons died 1 in traffic accidents within the county limits. The following year, 1954, downed a record death total that had stood since 1945. Fifty-nine persons died in the county from traffic injuries during 1954, breaking 1945's previous all-time record of 55. The next two years were worse: a new record of 65 deaths was set in 1955, while 1956 ran close second with 62. LAST YEAR'S fatality count leaned heavily toward state and FORD GIVES MORE FOR '58 600 and 800 EQUIPMENT 3-4 Plow Fordson Major Diesel SALES SERVICE "Specializing in Induttrial and Farm Equipment" 2525 N.
